Possible to make aircraft circle?
« on: February 20, 2011, 06:15:42 PM »

Im wondering is it possible to make an aircraft circle/continous pattern like a fuel tanker pattern? instead of making tons of waypoints simulating this or am i going to have to do that? since i plan on making a mission where a KB-29 flys in a tanker type pattern for multiple refuelings

Hi Shazer,

Don't aircraft usually go into a circle pattern when reaching their last waypoint, if that waypoint is not "landing," but "normal flight"? Try giving your B-29 tanker only two waypoints. I think, it should circle. However, I have no idea how to influence the diameter of that pattern.

Hope this helps,

Tankers usually fly an oval race track pattern since it is easier for the refueling planes to fly straight and level rather than do a lot of banking. Too many things to do all at once in order to get some go juice.

the easiest way to reproduce this is to simply give the tanker two waypoints a fair distance from each other, then just repeat the next waypoints over the previous ones, so you'd have a long, straight line of waypoints repeated over each other. this should produce the desired result without being too complicated. ;)

I had a similar need in one of my campaigns and I found that if I set just one waypoint (with desired altitude and speed) the plane(s) would cirlce that point. The circle is a fairly tight radius though so it may or may not suit you.

sorry for the 2/3 month of not replying forgot i made a post on this lol

Anyway i just decided to make  a ton of waypoints as i know the aircraft would circle if it didnt have another waypoint but theh circle's 2 tight for an easy(ier) hook up to refuel, and i didint think about long waypoints but the tanker would of been shot down by migs lol due to where it was at, thanks for the help/suggestions

The one thing I have hoped for is a "Loiter" waypoint where the planes would make a 5 square mile circle and loiter for however long you set for that way point.  You could have planes fly out to a determined map coordinate and loiter for 10 minutes, fly to another waypoint and loiter for 5 minutes, and so on for a patrol.  It would cut down on waypoints that we have to use now, and keep the FMB map a bit cleaner and easier to read.

Keepin the fingers crossed, someone takes this on and its doable.

Another nice feature would be a Ship convoy group much like the vehicle convoy groups we have now, you could pick your convoy,(transports, oilers, and escorts) and country of origin, place it on the map, pick the speed for it only once and you're good to go, where now you have to place each ship on the map, set the waypoints and speed for each one, very very time consuming in the current format.

Keepin fingers crossed on both fingers for this one as well........ ;D

Yea, just set one way point over, let's say an airfield, and the a/c will fly CAP until their fuel runs low, then they will land. If enemy a/c approach, the CAP will attack them and afterwards, resume their CAP.

~S~
I just tried what most have said. I am building a mission where as I am using a B-17F as a
formation and Assembly plane. I set the AI at an Air Field, set take off and then place one way point
set the Altitdue say like 2500m then I place the way point 2 where I want the Bombers to Assembly at
and set the Altitude at say 7000m or what ever the Bombing Altitude will be. Then select save
and then unselect.  I tried it and it works.
Hope this helps you. Also there are some Assembly and formation skins that will help you see the Assembly
and formation Plane.
Here is the link to A&A Assembly Aircraft skins dl. 1st one is the B-17F
http://www.axis-and-allies-paintworks.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=171&t=1578
This is for the B-24 Assembly Aircraft skins:

these skins really helps you see the Assembly Aircraft.

Tanker question; When you take fuel from the tanker (in IL2) does that reduce the fuel in the tanker?

(i've been unable to get my wingmen to take fuel from the tanker - but that's probably me being stupid in how I "set" their actions at a waypoint) But I wonder what the fuel issue for the KB-29 will be if I get 8 jets to take a "suck".

Sorry for the bump but just wanted to say iv tested this again and its best to do oval type waypoints for the KB-29 tanker each 5 min apart works well iv found out
Also just a note ai cant hook up to the tanker its more player based anyway which was what my mission was for anyway
and no it doesnt drain from the tanker (from my testing)
would be nice to have a loiter waypoint as beo said
