Desert Skins for British Bomers?
« on: March 06, 2011, 12:57:45 PM »

With Redko's great desert maps I've been wondering if there are or could a generous skinner make some desert skins for the Lancaster,Hallifax and Wellington? I've looked online but have no reference pics of these birds in desert camo. I'm guessing they were used in Africa?

I'm no expert on british bombers, but Ive only ever heard of Halifax with the Egyptian and Pakistani air forces, and Wellingtons in the far east (outside of Europe of course). Never heard of a lanc in the med.
Wheres the bomber command buffs to straighten us out on this?

Hello mark, here are some skins I made some time ago for Lancasters of the Royal Egyptian Air Force.
The Grey scheme is what they were delivered in, the camouflaged version is based on very scant info, not sure if they flew in that scheme but it is based on a profile someone sent me.  They were made to fit the original Ranwers Lanc, not sure if they fit the last update as I haven't got around to downloading it.  There are files included that change the defaults in the mod so backup before pasting my files into it.

Sorry to say the template I used for these was ruined in a PC lock up so these are all there are, I didn't include blanks at the time so all I have are the Egyptian marked aircraft in a desert scheme.  I could if you want modify one as a blank, not quite sure how it would look though. ;)

CWMV, the Wellington did actually serve in the desert theatre, don't think there are skins available though.

Wishing you all the very best, Pete. ;D

Wellingtons were very much used as long-range night bombers in the Western Desert and as convoy-killers over the Med. Very important a/c in that theatre.

That makes sense given their range, good to know.

RAF Bomber Camo shouldn't be much different to fighter colours, just using bomber/large aircraft camo pattens.

I just googled "(Bomber name) in the mediteranian" Came up with a bunch of black and white photos of the wimpy, pretty cool. Didnt look like the pattern changed at all.

Halifaxes were based in the desert, but only early Merlin engined versions. They did sterling service too, bombing Italy/Sicily as well as targets in Libya and Tunisia. They fought in European bomber command livery, or all black. Same with the wimpy's too.

From my understanding, they intended to paint them in theatre, but they were so busy with the Afrika Korps that most didn't get allocated time for localised re-camo-ing, and after when there was time, the Allies had ariel superiority and didn;t really need to. Of course, air crews and erks' did do they're own if able to & chose too.
