Aviaskins Stumping Me
« on: March 15, 2011, 04:23:30 PM »

Hey Guys,

Every once in a while interesting links get posted at Aviaskins, and in order to get access I filled in the registration. It seems I was successful, as the site welcomes me by name, and yet I cannot get access to a lot of what is on the site. Can anyone explain and I hope help me navigate around Aviaskins?

I have pressed the translatino button at the bottom of the menu, but this doesn't give access to much.

Help appreciated.

copy and paste the entire url for the AviaSkins page you are at (from the address bar) into the translate window.  Select to translate from Russian to English (or your preference) and click the 'Translate' button.  Google will re-open the AviaSkins page inside a frame and will translate the whole page for you.  Works pretty well from there for most purposes...

The Russian lads call mods 'fashion' from memory, so watch out for that one.  :)

The whole "mod" = "fashion" is a crappy Google translation error.

Also, sometimes Google translate will refuse to open a link for you, and make it damned near impossible to find the original URL. In other cases, especially if you're trying to download something, it will say "original web page too long to translate." In that case, it gives you the option of seeing the "original page", which, of course, is the file you actually wanted.

If sometimes find that it's useful to have two tabs open - one with the Google translated page, the other with the original Russian.

I didn't think that that killer penguins taught Russian; Latin certainly, Italian, French or German maybe, but Russian? :)

Anyhow, what better way to practice your Russian by going to a Russian language web site?

I've found that once you suss out the Cyrillic alphabet, there are a fair number of borrowed words from English and other languages on the Aviaskins or Dispersal Field web sites, which makes it slightly easier to navigate. It also makes it slightly easier to find your way around if you screw up your modded installation and find that IL2 has lapsed into its native language.

Just be aware that that the Cyrillic alphabet has more letters than the Latin alphabet. The extra letters represent sounds which require two or more letters in the Latin alphabet - like "Sh," "Zh" or "Tch."
