Photos of US-USSR Military Cooperation in World War II
« on: March 17, 2011, 10:09:35 AM »

Some photos of the shuttle bombing operations during World War II named Operation Frantic and also of the lend-lease operations in Alaska. Amongst these photos is a rare Yak-4 bomber.

Great photos and post Woofiedog !  8)  Look at all those cool photos. Fantastic!

It´s great to see 2 of the greatest nations on this planet working together and flying together.
If only our diferences and political viewpoints could be overlooked, together they could have
made the world a better place for everyone to live in.

Instead, the world had to endure the tragic years of the "cold war" and other crazy shit.  :(
These days its seems we are slowly going back to another "cold war" and more crazy human behaviour.
I guess things will never change.

We are a species of animal who are destined for extinction ... we will extinct ourselves in a very tragic way!

Cockroaches and ants will then take over the planet...
... they will evolve into smarter beings.
Evolution will make them walk upright and tall...
... they will build civilizations and procreate in the millions, and they will make wars.
Then they will extinct themselves in a very tragic way too  :D

All that will be left will be a rocky lifeless planet circuling the sun until the end of time.

Just want to let everybody know..been reading about the history of WWII since I was a kid.
I know that Russia bore the brunt of the Nazi Effort..and suffered 20 million lost - and turned Hitler back at Stalingrad..before the U.S. even entered the war. I try to tell Americans I know who think The US won that war single handed that the Germans were so formidable they were actually holding us off with one hand tied behind their backs while they were trying to inflict a decisive defeat on Russia in a brutal, all-out, no holds barred, slug out on the Eastern Front.
I personally like the Russians and understand the significance of that giant statue on the Mamayev Kurgan in Volgagrad..what it means.
And I Reiterate- it's good to see people from these diverse nations gather in this - and other  -communities to celebrate military aviation.
It's expressive of the chivalry found between warriors on opposing sides and It's my hope that this spirit is maintained in the face of all the crap in the world right now.  :)

All happy smiling faces ... but sadly a lot of the Russian soldiers and airmen pictured in some of those photographs who worked with Allied troops were later considered to be "tainted" with western ideas and subsequently executed or ended their days in the GULAGs.

At the end of the war, Stalin insisted that the five million Soviet citizens in Allied controlled areas be returned to the Soviet Union. Three million had been forced laborers (OST-Arbeiters) under Nazi control. On their return, the OST-Arbeiters were treated as traitors and executed or sent to labour camps where most died of hunger and overwork. Stalin demanded the return of an additional two-million former Soviet citizens to exact revenge on them. They included anti-communists, Cossacks, Slavs and Poles many of whom were civilians who sought asylum in the West, knowing that a return to the Soviet Union meant execution. To appease Stalin and to ensure the return of more than 50,000 Allied troops initially captured by the Nazis and later detained under the direct orders of Stalin when the POW camps were "liberated" by Soviet troops, Roosevelt and Churchill agreed to this forced repatriation.

Unfortunately for the Allied troops awaiting repatriation, British intelligence retained a number of anti-Communist prisoners with the intention of reviving “anti-Soviet operations”, under orders from Churchill.  In response, the Soviets did not complete the repatriation of the Allied prisoners of war in their possession, leaving roughly 23,500 American and 30,000 British and Commonwealth soldiers in Soviet hands. A considerable number of these were airmen, who had been shot down over Germany. A small number of these men were to be repatriated in the coming years, as Stalin won various concessions, but the vast majority were sent to the GULAG camp system and never returned home.

It is a testament to the ruthless nature of Stalin, Churchill, Roosevelt - and all successive UK and US Heads of State - that this infamous episode has been deliberately suppressed - leaving almost 50,000 forgotten men to their fate.

A photograph is merely a instant in time and can never tell the whole story...

max_thehitman... A post from a few ages ago, time seems to slip by fast when your retired. LoL  ;)

The site does contain some fairly decent and quality photos.

If only our diferences and political viewpoints could be overlooked, together they could have made the world a better place for everyone to live in.

My own opinion, with the way present day state of political attitudes & viewpoints, along with the events that are taking place and shaping this world of ours. Sadly it seems that for any meaningful exchange of dialogue to take place, that could or might benefit us all at this time period. It would only be a fanciful conception or contrived idea for this to take place.

I recently read some combat reports by USAF dating to 1944-1945, aerial combat where
bothUS vs VVS met each other.
Funny reading really.
