Just outside Tripoli
« on: March 28, 2011, 01:56:55 AM »

Took this whilst on holiday (got back yesterday)

One to show the grandkids!

It was quite exciting going out to buy some wine and walking past a self propelled quadruple 20 mm anti-aircraft gun or 105 mm howitzer parked down a side street in downtown Beirut. Didn't take any photos of them as I didn't want my camera confiscated - I don't think they would but I didn't want to chance it

Apparently Israeli F16's sometimes invade Lebanese airspace in a show of defiance and ground defences shoot at them!

:)

Too bad you could not take pictures; I noticed in news reels they still use a lot of ww2 era equipment..   :D

Thanks for the comments :)

What I did notice was that the Lebanese army (you see a lot of them but they are very friendly) carry either Colt M16's / AR15's or battered looking vintage AK47's / short barrel AK47's

This came about due to unification of the various militias (which had split The Lebanon for 30 years), the Christian "Phalangists" were armed by the Israelis with American weapons and the Islamists / original Lebanese army with Russian weapons. Suppying them all with different caliber rifle ammunition must be a nightmare!

Give me an AK any day...

Your in Triploli!?!?!? That last place I would go right now for a vacation, unless I am
allowed to go duck hunting with an AK-47!  ;D Pretty place, but at the moment its
open hunting season for anyone walking around the place. I am glad to hear your doing fine.
I always giggle at those armed forces guys from the middle east driving around in their Toyota
4x4 trucks with a huge anti-aircraft weapon fixed in the rear. Those are some wicked looking
trucks. LOL
No wonder Toyota cashed in on its success by having their name painted in HUGE
Letters in the rear doors. Everytime some truck full of armed muslims drives past a news crew
filming them shooting their guns in the air, the trucks name shows up in the local nightly news.
Free publicity!! Hot Diggity-dog!! They should start selling some of those trucks already equipped with
rocket launchers and fancy weaponry... I would buy one!! I would be the first guy in my neighborhood
sporting a Toyota with a Scud missile!  8) DonĀ“t mess with me... I will blow your house down! LMAO

Glad to hear you made it home safely. Must have been interesting over there to say the least. They probably aren't too friendly with foreigners at this point.

It's Tripoli, Lebanon. Not Libya.

But Lebanon is unstable enough that my sentimate is the same as above.
