With the Helldiver it`s the same like   the  A-26 Invader, the P-61 Black Widdow and the B-26 Marauder:

often requested... will never be built...  :( :P

but is`s always a good request   ;)

It always amazed me that for the U.S. in the Pacific, the dive bomber, in the Dauntless, was the queen of thrashing the Japanese Navy, yet it's replacement wasn't really an improvement!  Of course, the design of the Helldiver was made before the glory days of the Dauntless were witnessed, and the point that making 880 changes can really mess up any design, but still, it would have been incredible if the same progress from the Devastor to the Avenger could have been seen from the Dauntless to something new!

I doubt I'd want to fly the Helldiver much, as it's a real cow!  But I've always wished it and the Devastator could be included, just to have a more accurate representation of early and later battles in the Pacific!

Actually ... the problems were with the -1 Helldivers, or the early variants. The late war variants "-4" had many of the kinks worked out. I remember reading that Helldivers alone sank more IJN ships than any other US type.

Offered and trialled to the Fleet Air Arm, the Helldiver was not purchased across the pond.

It was used a little bit further east by the RHAF. Sadly, its only combat career was during the Greek civil war right after the end of WWII, along with RHAF Spitfires.

One is still preserved in the HAF museum:

This would be a nice addition to Il-2.

navy pilots in world war2 thought that the aircraft was difficult to fly
so they used the letters and numbers in its designation to well.. give it a rank:Son of a Bitch 2nd Class
                                                                                                         S          B      2    C
if you didn't already know the aircrafts designation was SB2C
