Those smoke stacks are novel and a hazard so i'm going to assume that they swung out of position when aircraft were landing and if so could that be incoporated into a model?

Yes Max you are exactly right about the stacks.

See below...

I am sure the modders have it well in hand!

lol that was going to be my next question about Ranger. i'm not sure if they will or won't be able to swing out in il2. If someone was able to let me know if it can be done.

Here's a little update

for the time being i've left holes out for the stack

just leave them high...
-because they are a very distinctive feature of that ship
-because we can land properly.

:)

Or maybe a trick with the LoD - as you come closer, the shp model changes, and the stacks appear bent sideways, not upright.
but the smoke... would still be in the orioginal position.

They were definitely folded down during flight operations, much like the antenna that are on the port side of the Essex class ships. I doubt very much that the game will know when the ship has gone to flight quarters unless it can detect a friendly plane within a certain range, maybe like the AI gunners detect an enemy airplane?? But if you can't make that work, PLEASE, don't model them up.

There is not any existing way to get parts of the ship to animate -- other than guns/directors.
To do this would require some clever java programming, beyond my capability.
All existing carriers are modelled to show them as they would be when carrying out flight deck ops, so for Ranger this would mean stacks folded down.

To keep open the possibility of future animation model the stacks as separate parts with pivot points located correctly.

Blazing, it seems that your model has four prop shafts, but "Ranger" actually had only two shafts..........

As for the N-G thing, the USN's BuShips designed the ships, not the builders, so any copyright etc would surely rest with the USN and not N-G.

I'm sure you are right but the common sense legal interpretation was superseded by a specific written agreement between 1C and NG which was signed in order to head off a threat of legal action -- Yeh! agreement signed under duress and all that entails. The upshot is that 1C will not touch anything with a hint of NG association.

Blazing -- If you want to do justice to the Ranger you will probably need to get better drawings than you are currently showing on your images. The HNSA drawings which I posted a link to earlier in this post are the best I have seen so far, but there may be others available elsewhere.

Perhaps the animation sequence for landing gear would offer some possibilities in translation for the deployment of the stacks.
Also , since range of friendly aircraft is the desired trigger, perhaps exploring the code for ship to air flak could provide a few clues as to the correct coding ( changing the relevant army colour , of course)?

Just a couple of thoughts.

The legal stuff is a long story which I wont clutter up this thread with. Have a search for Northrop Grumman items on the 1C Forums if you want to know more. I cant imagine it having any impact on what you are doing. The result of it is that Team Daidalos will not include models of any ships built at the Newport News Ship Building Yard in official patches. This condition has been imposed on them by 1C.

Regarding your PM -- Combining separate textures into one is simply done by copying and pasting parts together in Photoshop, ensuring the total texture size does not exceed 1024x1024 pixels. Once you do this your model will need to have the texture mapping adjusted to suit the new texture.
