The SAS F#cking Big Default Skinmod (SAS FBDSM) PART 1-5
« on: April 08, 2011, 12:52:14 PM »

The SAS F#cking Bid Default Skinmod (SAS FBDSM)

by SAS~CirX, SAS~CrazyFlak and SAS~Riken

SFS archives Packed by UP~HaDeS

-----------------------------------------------
Introduction:

The first purpose of this series of mods is to update all the stock slot aircraft default skins in IL2 1946, to a more or less level standard.
The standard will correspond roughly to the new skins introduced in the 4.09 option skins update from 1C, or better.

This series deals exclusively with stock aircraft. modded aircraft can have ther own skins updated if needed.

The second purpose of this series of mods is to introduce a few new default theaters to IL2 (or more to the point, to provide default skins for those theaters when they are released)

Currently IL2 has only 3 available Map theaters : Summer, Winter and Desert. Summer is the default.
Summer is for all maps, with winter as an additional skin for planes that carried winter camouflage, to use on winter maps.
Desert is currently both for planes engaged in the pacific theater as well as the Mediteranian.

We will eventualy change all the pacific maps to something else, and assign DESERT exclusively to North Africa.

This skinmod replaces our previous SFS default skinmod.

It will come in parts. The first release is part 1,2,3,4,5. We divide these into archives smaller than 100mb each, to ease downloading.

Part 1,2,3,4 and 5 are a collection of updated SUMMER and WINTER skins for 307 instances of those in IL2. They are roughly split in alphabetical order.

Part 7 will contain only the aviaskins new 3d MIG-3 default skins

Part 8 will consist mainly of new and reassigned Desert Skins for the mediteranian theater. It will also contain some inevitable fixes

Part 9 will focus on a new PACIFIC theater, as well as other default replacements and fixes.

Part 10 onwards will continue replacing defaults, adding fixes and updates, and adding theaters as the Map mods to support them appear (without them, all the planes flying on that map will simply use their SUMMER skin)

This series of mods are presented in SFS format, courtecy of UltraPack. This is to minimise loading time. In tests on a clean 4.101 install with basic SAS modact, the game with the new default skins actualy seemed to load on average 0.3 seconds faster. We have no idea why! But its cool!

This mod is not aimed at replacing all skins in IL2, only those in need of it. It is also not intended to give every aircraft the "coolest skin there is". A default skin is actualy a very hard thing to do, it has to be believable, yet generic, immersive yet neutral, tastefull yet universally acceptable, and those are very hard to come by.

----------------------------------------------
Credit and Process:

Skins for this mod was and will be obtained from numerous sources.
Many skins from the previous SAS Default skinmod, as well as HSFX, UP, and other collections were reviewed and used. many of the skins come from collections built up over years, and some skins were even custom made especially for this pack. In some instances the stock skin of a plane was good enough to be used as a template, and various recolours, saturations, correcting of lines and other graphic improvements were made. Most of the skins from IL2 skinners used were also modified to some extent where needed to provide an acceptable DEFAULT skin. Generally, skins that came with the 4.09 optional stock skin update were not worked on, with a few exceptions.

Also newly released material from TD were in most cases not touched, as they tended to be good quality already. Skins of the "ACES" were also not edited, as they are just a complete waste of space.

DESERT skins of current planes have been heavily updated, but are held back from part 1-5, since part 7 will focus on them in better detail.

We eventually found it an impossible task to trace all the skinners, template makers and artists who's work are contained in this.

We ask forgiveness if a credit is ommited, and if contacted we will correct this immediately. We are very very thankfull for the astonishing amount of work skinners and template makers have put into their work, and we are very thankfull to use then in this.

The list of skinners and template makers will only be here in this Mod's download thread, and we will update it easily if we hear of an ommision. If your name appears here twice or more, it is just our mistake, but, you probably deserve it anyway! :D

Credits and Thank You, to these skinners, template makers and skin editors, who made this package possible:

Installation for users of UP3:

NOTE: SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS FOR INSTALLING FBDSM SFS FILES FOR USERS OF SAS MODACT 3.06 OR LATER: You dont have to add lines to your .rc file, just copy the SFS files from this mod, into your SAS_SFS folder, replacing the placeholders already there.

NOTE: SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS FOR INSTALLING FBDSM SFS FILES FOR USERS OF ULTRAPACK 3 and/or DARK-BLUE-WORLD: You dont have to add lines to your .rc file, just copy the SFS files from this mod, into your main game folder, replacing the placeholders already there.

Installation For Other Packs and older modacts than SAS 3.06(short version):

Users of the old SAS Default skinmod, in either MODS form of in SFS (SAS_Skins01.sfs) should remove it and its entry into their .rc file completely, it is totally obsolete now.
Also remove any other default skinmods you may have, as they will cause this to not load into your game completely.

1) Copy the archive .sfs  file you extracted form your download into your main game folder
2) Find the .rc file in your FILES folder (or MODS Folder, depending on your installation) in your main game folder. Open it with wordpad or notepad. At the bottom of the file, find the lines that MOUNT sfs archives. Find the last line, it will be

#preload REGISTER

and just above it, enter the lines for the SFS archives you have placed in your install. The lines for the first 6 parts will for example be:
Just check your particular install.

@sfs MOUNT sasup_fbdsm_01.sfs
@sfs MOUNT sasup_fbdsm_02.sfs
@sfs MOUNT sasup_fbdsm_03.sfs
@sfs MOUNT sasup_fbdsm_04.sfs
@sfs MOUNT sasup_fbdsm_05.sfs

Save and close the file, and you are done.

Installation for Other Packs and older modacts than SAS 3.06 (Better explained):

Users of the old SAS Default skinmod, in either MODS form of in SFS (SAS_Skins01.sfs) should remove it and its entry into their .rc file completely, it is totally obsolete now.
Also remove any other default skinmods you may have, as they will cause this to not load into your game completely.

To install any .SFS mod, you simply copy the SFS archive into your main IL2 game folder (where all the other SFS files are already)

In UP3x, there will perhaps already be "placeholder" SFS archives with the same names in your install. They will be empty archives that you can simply replace with these, no other steps needed.

For other users, you must then find the .rc file for your particular modactivator or pack.

In most packs like HSFX, this file will be in the FILES folder.
In older SAS Modactivators it will also be in the FILES folder

Once you have it, make a backup of it for safe keeping. The open it with any text editor like wordpad.

At the end of the file, you will see a list of SFS archives and the order they get loaded in. Archives lower on the list will overwrite content in archives higher on the list.

The list may look something like this (this is just a short extract, not the whole list):

@sfs MOUNT fb_maps15.sfs
@sfs MOUNT fb_maps16.sfs
@sfs MOUNT fb_maps17.sfs

@sfs MOUNT fb_sound.sfs
@sfs MOUNT fb_sound01.sfs
@sfs MOUNT fb_sound02.sfs
@sfs MOUNT fb_sound03.sfs
@sfs MOUNT fb_sound04.sfs
@sfs MOUNT fb_sound05.sfs

@sfs MOUNT SASSound01.sfs
@sfs MOUNT SASBasic27.sfs

#preload REGISTER
@file .preload

So, to make the game load the new SFS archive on startup, you need to add it to this list, like this

@sfs MOUNT THE_NAME_OF_THE_NEW_ARCHIVE_HERE.sfs

so, for example, for an archive called "sasup_fbdsm_07.sfs", the line will look like this:

@sfs MOUNT sasup_fbdsm_07.sfs

NOTE: You must be carefull to not add incorect lines, or lines for archives you dont have in your game folder. This will cause your game to crash after 5% of loading. You can choose to load any or all the FBDSM skinmod parts seperately as you choose. They can all be in your install, if they have a line in the .rc file, they will load, if not, they wont.

Now the next thing you must take care of, is where you add the line.

There will be a general suggestion for every such SFS mod, pay heed to it.

For the Default Skin Mods, we recommend you add the lines right at the end, right BEFORE the line that reads:

#preload REGISTER

So, for example, In my installation it looks like this:

Quote
....
@sfs MOUNT fb_sound03.sfs
@sfs MOUNT fb_sound04.sfs
@sfs MOUNT fb_sound05.sfs
@sfs MOUNT fb_sound06.sfs

@sfs MOUNT sasup_fbdsm_01.sfs
@sfs MOUNT sasup_fbdsm_02.sfs
@sfs MOUNT sasup_fbdsm_03.sfs
@sfs MOUNT sasup_fbdsm_04.sfs
@sfs MOUNT sasup_fbdsm_05.sfs

#preload REGISTER
@file .preload

Install the additional archive in this series always after the first one, so, if I installed the first 6 parts, the lines will look like this:

@sfs MOUNT sasup_fbdsm_01.sfs
@sfs MOUNT sasup_fbdsm_02.sfs
@sfs MOUNT sasup_fbdsm_03.sfs
@sfs MOUNT sasup_fbdsm_04.sfs
@sfs MOUNT sasup_fbdsm_05.sfs

And then you are done. If you did it incorrectly, your game will either crash at 5%, or the new default skins will not be visible.
If you did do it right, you will have beautifull new default skins to look at. To see a list of skins changed in parts 1 to 4, see below:

Thanx, but it is not our first by a long shot. We have had the soundmods in SFS for more than a year already, and most of our modact in it since this year :)

Methinks this should go into the new UP by default!

Thanks for the awesome job you did with this collection, a great improvement indeed!

Actually, I am not sure how much Hades will include. I assume the new UP will mostly only have the usual selection of new def skins, to keep the DL size for other more improtant stuff. There will however be a number of "placeholder" SFS files in the new UP, that you can just drop these downloads into and replace, so it wont affect your online crt or anything. It has all ben "organised". ;)

Great Skin mod! but why FW190A4,5 skins look like painted with oil? I am really not sure if FW190A4 should be painted as it as in history, which was introduced in 4.09patch?
