Need Info Please : MTO experts required
« on: April 17, 2011, 08:59:23 PM »

Hi guys

currently working on the desert add on for the FBDSM (big default skinmod)

Can anyone who knows, or everyone, list the planes in the stock game that also operated in the North African theater, and the mediteranian south. Drawing the line before the italian invasion.

Thanx!

I haven't had time to check all the dates these first entered service as to whether they were in the MTO before or after the invasion of Italy...and I think I've removed all non stock IL2 aircraft but maybe this list will help give someone else a head start if I don't get time to get back to it to add and remove aircraft.

I'll stick to what I know here...
A-20C
B-25C
B-17E
B-17F
C-47
F4F-4 (Torch landings only)
Hawk 75A (not sure if -3 or -4 - used by Vichy)
P-40E
SBD-5 (Torch only)
TBF-1 (Torch only)

The P-38F is a MOD aircraft. The oldest stock P-38 is the J which would just miss the September 1943 cutoff.
The P-400 was only used in the PTO
I'm pretty certain the P-51B/C misses the date cutoff as well, since they didn't arrive in England until around Sep/Oct 1943.

This is great stuff guys, it is going to help a lot, keep adding if there are any missing.

Dont worry, I will also verify before assigning desert skin to a model.

Also, dont have to list Italian planes, as they all in desert camo already.

Hi. The desert skinmod is well underway, but I am held up with some silly but tricky questions. Perhaps someone here can help with some of them.

the questions I have:

What model B17's flew in MTO? Apart from the G which flew in Israel. And, Which stock B17s DID NOT fly in MTO?
Did any stock modquitos ever have a specific desert or MTO camo?

What models P39 did fly in North Africa, and by which nation? (I know there is Tuskegee airmen, and france, but I dont know what models of how they looked)
But ALSO: Which of those models ALSO flew in the pacific, and for which nations?

Did the USA ever fly Hawk81, P40B or C, in MTO?

Whats is the last model bf109 (stock) to fly in MTO (prior to invasion of italy)

Did Vichy France fly Morane MS406 and 410 in North Africa?

Was the fairy fulmar ever used in MTO? If so, only by RAF or by some other nation also?

Was the Hs129B-3Wa ever used in MTO?

Are there any of the stock Spitfire's that ALSO flew in the iraeli war of independance? AND, which stock Spitfires DID NOT fly in the MTO?
Did do 217 ever fly in MTO with MTO camo? (I think stupid question but I have to ask)

I hope anyone can help please.

Not in North Africa for Vichy it seems (they had D.520 and Curtiss H-75).

Just for info, during the beginning of the war, before vichy, GC I/10 in Oran-La Senia had 29 planes and ERC.574 à Sidi-Ahmed, Tunis had 11 planes.

There was also moranes in Rayak (Syria) for the GC I/7, used in 1941 against the RAF I think (but i have not my book at hand) ; they were passed on to the Free French forces but not many survived the RAF.

Some more were in Thailand and Madagascar.

There were 109G-6s at the end in Tunisia and in Sicily

I've seen nothing of the 75mm gunned 129s in the MTO

Do217s wore factory splinter schemes

:)

The 109G-6 had no proper desert camo but flew with theater recognition bands (white, at variance with Eastern front yellow bands). This is true in general for both the Luftwaffe and Regia Aeronautica G-6s.

impossible to say but yes I would stick to a standard factory scheme, the most common at the time wouls be a 163XXX mtt Regensburg pattern, like these ones

While there isnt any photo evidence of G-6s in Tunisia and Sicily with any field painting for either Jg53 or 77, Steinhoff wrote in his book about thier aircraft were repainted in 'European paint schemes', this might include any G-6's they had.

While some of 7./Jg27 had its G-6's repainted in an exact copy of the official 109G RLM Pattern on their return to Italy From Sciliy and crete, why would they need to do this if they already had a factory scheme?

So while there was no 'proper' desert pattern theres plenty of chances for field schemes to have been used.
