Not so good for Jaffa since the sounds come mixed ...

But for us... great!!  8)
Absolutely indeed..

Remarkable how the 109 seems to be louder, atleast the supercharger whistle stands out above all.

OH MY F*%$&N GOD!!!!!!!

That is one of the most beautiful sounds I have ever heard!

Although they are mixed, you can make out the difference, the 109 having pronounced supercharger whistle, the Spit being more throaty IMHO.

Impeller Supercharger (Turbine) 'Whine' blowing/sucking air in, might be roots/lobbed types. *Aarruuuugggaaa, Aarruuuugggaaa* Sorry, Congo's correct, the roots charger if fitted on a Spit', was for cockpit pressurisation only.

Theres nothing like engines bigger than 25L coming on throttle 8)

Yeah- the merlin being 27 litre- 12 pistons of 2.25 litres!!! Thats like each piston being larger than your average European family car, times 12, with a supercharger! The Db605 is a massive 35.7 litres (12 X 2.97), so I think we can assume that either the Roots supercharger is more efficient, or the Merlin is a better engine, as they have similar outputs (Db605- 1455 hp / Merlin 61 1564 hp) but the '605 is 8.7 litres larger!

Im sure that statement should start an argument!!!

Only problem is neither of these powerplants have Roots SC,s. They both have Centrifugal compressors with an impeller and diffuser ring.

I bow to your superior knowledge, Congo- just assumed razor1uk was correct.

Well, in that case, Merlins must just be better!!!!

The one advantage that the DB,s had over the RR was from a maintenance standpoint. On the DB,s with the inverted installation and externally mounted SC was that the Superchargers could be replaced without a complete engine teardown and the lower part of the case could be accessed without engine removal though hydraulic lock is more prevalent in inverted powerplants. On the Merlins the SC is forward of the accessory case and requires removal of the powerplant to access the impeller and diffuser.

HE-219 powerplant with intake and exhaust maniflods removed. You can see the motor drive for prop pitch and the fuel injection unit between the cylinder banks. The valve covers have also been removed exposing the camshafts and scavenge pumps. This particular design was a cam in head rather than a true overhead cam. At the bottom you can just make out the inlet for the cooling pump impeller.

Pah! 'maintenance'?! Leave that to the spanner jockeys! Dont care about the removal of the supercharger, unless you are talking by the use of bullets!!(only joking)

Interesting photo- seems German engineers like the cam in head design as I used to have an Opel with a similar arrangement. I always wondered how the inverted V could work without the cam boxes filling with oil, but I can see scavenge pipes with filters in the picture.

Ah, whoops, was thinking of the cabin pressurisation pump, used as a supercharger on many post war drag bikes...
Cheers congo ;D 8)
