i've tried repairing the installation from the windows 7 upgrade cd I had (my laptop was windows vista but I got an upgrade with the package we bought) but for what ever reason it didn't do the trick.

I've succeeded in get ubuntu on my laptop, so it has booted up.. I'm about to look around, see how things are, and try and desperately making backups that I should have made ages ago...

--edit--
thank god for that, I can access files et al through the ubuntu disk - thanks so much WhoDatNotSayin. I'm copying the files over now, will take a while I suspect.

Guys, thank you all for your help and advice. Windows is not fixed, so I'll have the bootup trouble, but I can try and fix that when the copying is done and if necessary, reinstall Windows all over.

Apologies for double post, but:

fixed my laptop, more or less. Guys, thanks so much for all your help and suggestions. I saved far more than i was hoping, a few things need reinstalling and updating but as far as saving the 'games and stuff' folder, it was a big success.

Once more, I cannot state how grateful I am for all your help and advice gents. Many thanks indeed!

Glad we could help, Moggy.

As for the rest of us, let this be a reminder to back stuff up more often (me included. I've got over 3 Gb of photos on my camera that ought to be backed up, and a Gb or two of downloads, and..., and...).

And for the more paranoid amongst us, making a Ubuntu Live CD before your system crashes isn't such a bad idea. For the price of a blank CD-R you can have a little more peace of mind.
