How it all started ?
« on: April 24, 2011, 04:19:03 PM »

Hi !

I wanted to ask you when you started playing il2 or wich version you had, how you got into il2 and ww2 stuff ?

To my part: I am 16 now and i started playing il2 in 2004 i think. I bought the very firt version of the game.
Then I so to say discovered the expansion packs. i didn't really know how many expansions were out.
So i bought every expansion, i played unpatched il2 until 2010 when i tried online gaming with il2 and accidently went
on the aviator mod team server where they tested hawker hunters and stuff.F22-raptor-2006 told me about this site
and i discovered the modding community. (I didnt know who he was or what av8tor mod team was.)
I got my knowledge of (ww2) planes trough reading a lot about it, playing il2 and building plastics. I started when i was about 6 years and my grandpa told me storys about the time when he was a pilot. He was a german nightfighter pilot
at the western front. He flew the Me109 and the Ju88. And now i would say that i know pretty much about ww2 planes with my age.

Id like to hear your story about il2  :)

Interesting post PhazE!  It reminds me of the days when I played flightsim 1 on a Tandy 1000 computer on 5 1/4 floppy discs...I'm 34 now and amazed to see how far flight sims have come along,  Il2 being the best of course!  I've gone through every Il2 from the beginning, probably much the same way you did, and I only discovered the SAS a few months ago, when I found IL2 1946 at Canadian tire for 20 bucks, then went online to find patches and stuff!  Very good to hear of your grandfather's service as a night fighter pilot.  Thankfully he never found my grandfathers Lancaster of 428 squadron, RCAF (mid upper gunner) or I might not be here to converse with you as a friend with a common interest.  Nice to meet you!

I started with the original IL2 (before the Ju-87b was flyable) Always have played offline. Before that, I played with CFS3, 2, and 1.
Have 7 different Il2 set ups on my computer. When UP3 comes out, I'll probably delete all but that one and the SAS 2.101 for playing. (but I'll keep a "clean" 4.101 just in case)

I began with IL-2 in 2002, after buying my first computer. That was my first flightsim, but I bought this one first because the Russian planes really met my interest ( I have always been a fan of red star planes, up to now...).

So, on my computer, I now have :

-IL-2 Demo 1,
-IL-2 Demo 2,
-Il-2 Sturmovik 1.2 (still love the sound of the I-16 in the first generation of the game...),
-IL-2 FB-AEP 2.04 because of some campaign with the old method of parking starting planes,
-a 4.101 installation (unmodded) with nothing else that what comes out of the box and normal patches,
-6 4.09 installs (C6 pack basic and C6 pack modded, UP 2.01 basic, modded and 2 modded with the multi install exe mod of the game),
-3 4.101 modded version of the game (a 2.72 modact with multi install exe, a 3.0 modact and the last HSFX).

But now, I spend too much time on inserting new mods, and tests, and not enough flying for the pleasure !

Maybe I should go back to the 1.2...

I'm playing Il-2 from the beginning, i think  it was 2001, always offline.

My first flghtsim was "Their finest hour" from Lucas Art, 1990 (!), after this the whole stuff like secret weapons of the Luftwaffe, Aces of the pacific, Aces over europe, CFS 1, 2,3 Eurpean Airwar, Red baron and so on and so on ...

And after buying CloD, i will play il-2 for some years more ...

One of the 1st flightsims I played was back on my old 80-88 machine, I believe it was M$ Flight Simulator 2/II or 3..

After that LucasArts Finest Hour quickly followed, SWOTL, Dawn Patrol, F-29 Retaliator, Falcon series, EAW, EF2000, CFS 1-3, SDOE, Flying Corps(e :P ) Janes Attack Squadron and since the very first release of IL2 Sturmovik, it's never been off my HD..

I probably missed a few, but hell, can't be arsed to dig my memory atm. ;)
All I know is that I totally quit playing (M$) flightsims or anything that has'nt got any guns/ordnance to destroy stuff.

I began with 1946 as a birthday present. Year or so later, I found AAA. First time at modding, FAIL. Another year, came back to SAS. Believe first mod was a MiG-15. Less than a year later, found SAS. I was here for a while, and a little bit before AAA went down, I made a new account as Arkbird. Now, here I am, pretty much only at SAS.

I first played IL-2 via a leaked copy of the beta - a long time ago.  In the early days I flew a lot online participating in one of the early online wars 'DiD' with a degree of success.

Prior to that the earliest experience of what you could call a flight sim was Elite on the BBC Micro in about 1985.  From there I graduated to the Amiga 500 and Battlehawks, Their Finest Hour, SWOTOL, Falcon ST, B-17 Flying Fortress and Red Baron amongst others.

Then onto the PC in about 1991 and Chuck Yeager Air Combat, the Aces series, Tornado (absolute classic) Falcon 3 and Pacific Air War.

After a hiatus of a few years it was back to a new generation of PCs and Red Baron 3D, Flying Corps, Longbow 2 (another classic), B-17 II, EAW, SDOE (was heavily into online and modding), Falcon 4, EECH and of course IL-2.

I've always been interested in military history especially WWII.  I had an uncle who shared and encouraged my enthusiasm and was also a civil pilot.  I was lucky enough to get to fly with him on a fairly regular basis.  I also had some limited stick time in the ATC on the Chipmunk and have been lucky enough to have also had a flight in a Tiger Moth.  I have always viewed computers as time machines that enable me to to travel back to an earlier age and experience at least to some degree what it might have been like to fly a Bf109 or a P-47 and participate in history's greatest conflict.

When I buy the first Il2 just after his release I don't have a powerfull computer and I have to wait two years before flying over Russia. Ten years later it is still my favorite game and I fully take pleasure with a good cumputer, track ir, rudder pedals and of course a lot of new planes!
