Question on updating the campaings in Enjoyers patches.
« on: April 24, 2011, 11:00:47 PM »

So I have the very popular Enjoyr patch for my '46+BoE install. Just for example the Reichsverteidigung campaign in it (von Boelcke) is included at version 1.1 or some such.
This campaign has been updated since Enjoyr's patch release to version 2, and there are a few patches to it as well.
Now to update this campaign do I just go into the JSGME file for the campaign, merge the the new version with it, and call it a day? I would think I could install the new version to my desktop, then merge it with the JSGME campaign folder and it would be good to go, and add whatever patch files are needed to bring it up to speed.
Is that about right or am I way off base?

do not do that with Boelckes campaigns!

at one point enjoyr and Boelckes naming of the files drifted apart, DE+ being DE# in the other, something like this.... you have to compare and remane first.

so, unpack the new files from Boelcke in a new folder, find out which files is supposed to be called what in the Enjoyr pack (your DGEN folder) and rename them in your new folder before replacing.
otherwise you will screw up other campaigns, as basically all german campaigns for example are already taken and there is no free slots anymore.

Wow! I am so glad i posted this!

Think I will just keep the campaign installed separately for now, thought I will look at the naming issue!
Thanks a million!

EDIT: Wait, I did know about this! :D

I think your referring to what Boelcke addresses here yes?

"ATTENTION: If you use enjoyr´s patch you have to to this:

Install the "defense of the Reich" campaign to desktop or into a temp folder and rename the files

campaignsDeo.dat
campaignsDeo_ru.dat
campaignsDeo_de.dat
classesDeo.dat
planesDeo.dat
squadronsDeo.dat

into

campaignsDe¦.dat
campaignsDe¦_ru.dat
campaignsDe¦_de.dat
classesDe¦.dat
planesDe¦.dat
squadronsDe¦.dat

and copy all the files into the dgen folder overwriting the old ones."

The reason for using different letter codes is the fact that all these letters and symbols which enjoyer uses, cause all the available letters and numbers are in use for german campaigns, causes many troubles for people in the asian region. I had many posts about it and abadonned these symbols.

The problem of enjoyers patch has become in the meantime that he adds all available stuff together without sorting out outdated stuff. TLD is in my opinion completly outdaed and uses many slots, but it's still part of enjoyrs patch, also there are other parts of it obsolete but still in use, using preciuos letters or numbers.

My modded campaigns are not up to date in enjoyrs patch.

Boelcke, I am also gearing up to look at this issue.

From my side, we have an enormous problem with the use of custom skins in dynamic campaigns...for some like me, who realys truggle to download big things, being able to download a few MB of great campaigns is nice, but having to download the billion gigs of customs skins for them also (many of the skins of which are not always good, or not always "on a par" in timbre to others in the campaign), and fankly NEVER EVER EVR being able to get all the right skins in all the right folders to play any mission or campaign without glitches, unmarked or wrongly skinned planes, it is a pain.

We have sent many many months rewriting the marking system of IL2, and many more, building default skinpacks, which we are expanding all the time. In many cases now, a default skin and new markings on, look better than some old skins with markings on, or off.

So I have been working with an application called TextCrawler, and have collected all the needed regular exressions, to put out a very simple and quick tutorials for any user, to instantly rewrite all their campaign and mission files to only use default skins, markings, pilots.

This, together with our working with UP to make a complete SFS based map set availbale for all, will make it possible to compile a very comprehensive and complete un-outdateable pack of dynamic campaigns and missions than any of our users can install and use (with UP3 or with the related SAS3 add-ons), without having to worry once about anything else.

It seems to me you are the perfect person to build such a pack. Let me know if we must start talking.

I have looked at BOE with initial enjoyr patches, and frankly, it looks like a disaster area. it is simply nowhere near as simple as it realy should be.

And, like I suspect many many many users before me, looked at all the skins I had to download seperately, downloaded the first little batch, looked at the quality of it, and just threw it all in the trashcan, new campaigns included. And I am lucky, I had Vincent who could give me lots of advice and guidlines for doing all this, but by the time the emails instructions was onto the third or 4th email, and I had seen the guides included, which make the whole UP, SAS, and HSFX guides all combined look like a little pamplet, I could see this area of the game is well and truly stuffed up.

CirX!

A bit OT, but I got curious:

Should I interpret what you said above that you prefer the using of "default" whenever possible also in ordinary, static campaigns?

Using just default skins makes campaign building easier. I did the first version of "Fighter Boys" with just default skins + markings ON, but some people said that it looked dull, so I changed that in future version and put in custom skins.

I think it would benifit campaigns builders tremendously if they could offer their creations in both varieties.

The default skin situation in IL2 , we have imporved it enormously recently, and the horrible markings we had, is gone forever. We have also started with adressing theaters now (desert add on 1 for the FBDSM will be out later this week),.

So yes, people like myslef, and I am sure I represent at least 50%, would like to have our campaigns as is, and if new skins are to go on them, we would like to do it ourselves.

I suggest campaign builders do their campaign with their choice of skins, and prior to release make a duplicate version with the skins knocked off. I know how much work that entails: about 30 seconds with text crawler.

Boelke has written me and I will see later today, when I am properly awake, if I can talk him into making for SAS and UP a "Mega Campaign Pack", a one click, no skins, no patches required, pack of everything that has gone before, for the thousands of users who have thus far shied away from anything with "DGen" in it, for many of the reasons mentioned.

If someone else wants to step up and work with me to construct such packs for static campaigns and single missions also, please do PM me. I will make you famous! :)

@ Boelke, I have BoE, Ostfront and Operation Barbarossa. I wonder if O and OB are your campaigns? About BoE, is it playable on 4.101 + SAS 3 with the updates from A&A? I have been flying BoE campaigns on and off but the last few years there has been so much modding that career flying has been next to impossible while trying too keep on track with the IL2 developement! As for the time beeing I´d want to take a rest from updating mods and fly, especially a BoE campaign. So what´s best to do? Go the DCG way or, if possible BoE + updates?
