Dual GTX 460 via SLI or single GTX 580
« on: May 02, 2011, 01:51:19 PM »

So my household budget has gone up a bit and I'm wondering if Ill get better performance (solely in IL2) with two GTX 460 1GB or a single GTX 580?
I already have the one 460, my only concern is power consumption, by adding another 460 will my power needs double?

My advice: go for the 480 and sell your 460. In SLI you will get +40% of performance in this game with the second VGA card. I have had two SLI,s. I know what I say.

Moreover, probably your PSU is enpugh to handle one only GTX580. You will save money.

... two GTX 460 1GB won't total 2 GB but in fact only 1 GB, whereas the GTX580 has 1,5 GB, and not only of that course ...  ;)

I have 2 Gtx 460s but when I try to use them in SLI my game stutters. One 580 will probbly work better for IL-2.

You can solve the stutters using SFR instead of AFR SLI way. You will need Nvidia Inspector to do it. Stutters are present in Alternative Frame Rendering (AFR) but is not in Split Frame Rendering (SFR). Check it.

I found less FPS with SLI then without (in IL2)
No difference with SFR or AFR.
Even worse with other games like TOW.
Maybe it's just my video card, an old 9800GX2

To be honest, unless you are playing lots of other cutting edge games, I wouldn't waste your money on GTX580 at this stage (especially if you are concerned with power consumption). I run a GTX260 and can still play most new games on high medium to max settings at above 1680x1050 resolutions. I'd think you wouldn't noticed any difference in gameplay performance between a 460 or 580 in Il-2 (if there is one, it would be a few extra frames per second that you wouldn't even notice)

The 460 is still a good card in it single form :)
