Colour of Fog (..and clouds?) in IL2
« on: May 03, 2011, 12:55:18 PM »

Hi guys, :) I'm not sure if this is the right place to make this request.

Does anybody know where it's controlled the colour of the fog? but you know what I mean, that fog you get when it's early in the morning and the weather is set to 'Hazy'. See screenshot below.

It would be ideal if this can be controlled at map level. The reason I ask, of course, is because I'd like to change the colour of the fog in desert maps to a more brown colour, to simulate sand storms. Actually the colour of the clouds could have a bit more red - yellow and less blue in the white tone, but I believe the colour of the clouds (the Cummulo Nimbus, I mean, not the High clouds) is fixed for all maps, right? The High clouds can be controlled at map level, that's for sure.

Can anybody confirm this? thanks :)

I can't help you with that but I've been thinking about that too. Or creating something like a desert storm. I've tried to realize it by changing the parameters of a smoke object. The only thing that came out of it was a gigantic huge ball of black smoke.  ;D

Lol :D yeah, besides with smoke objects probably the FPS would go down very quickly, right? cheers

Well in my opinion it's looking AWESOME. The only thing is that possibly approaching this problem with objects means that it's too localized and looks a bit weird from a distance. A desert storm would cover much more distance, that's why the fog would be great for that I think. But the screens look really good, mate, maybe you can release the object and we can test it a bit.

Cheers!

It was just a first try...
I combined Stuka_40's smoke mod with Soccorrista's Tank Dust mod and edited it's parameters a bit.

Here is Stuka_40's Birds and Smoke mod:

https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,7916.0.html

and here are the entries I put in the chimmney_Smoke_Black EFF file.

[ClassInfo]
ClassName TSmokeSpiralParams
[General]
MatName ..\Materials\WhiteSmoke.mat
Color0 0.8 0.7 0.5 0.1
Color1 0.9 0.8 0.7 1.0
nParticles 16
FinishTime -1.0
MaxR 1
PhiN 2.0
PsiN 0.4
LiveTime 5.0
TranspTransitionTime 0.5
EmitVelocity 1.0 1.5
EmitFrq 3.0
Wind 1.0
Size 1500.0 3000.0
GasResist 1.0
VertAccel 0.0
Rnd 0.3
EmitTheta 0.0 30.0

And in game it looks like my first screenshot and on screenshot number 2 you see 4 of those edited smoke mods.
I really don't know till how far you can extend the size (height and width) of this smoke mod . Fiddle around with it, maybe you come up with something very interesting.

Inside Plutonium effects mod there is folder named : " SpritesFog " with included texture .
Copy that folder in to your effects mod whichever mod you're using :
YourEffectsMod\3DO\Effect\SpritesFog and try giving that texture inside SpritesFog folder
new painted sand color and try it in game .
It might work , I used to have even blue haze when testing this effect a long time ago but
except for reducing texture file size down to only 17kb , we left it as it is without any other changes  ;D

S! HG  :)

PS: @ Uufflakke , that's a nice try  8)

Wow very good hint HolyGrail! I'll do some experiments this weekend.

@Uufflakke thanks mate! I'll try that also, but Holy's suggestion is more near to what I was thinking. The only thing is that we cant' control it at map level... we'll see.

But.... I was thinking that actually a super good mod would be one in which we can control from the load.ini of the map more textures, like the ones we use for fog or for the tank's smoke. Some tanks dust mods look better in the desert than in other maps. So would be fantastic to be able to control that from the map. Or somehow, have a control file somewhere that makes effects 'local' to some maps. Not sure if someone has experimented in that direction yet.

A bit off topic, but I also still wonder if the color of the sky can be altered. E.g. for deserts and Pacific, I'd like more upper blue as seen in many regions, e.g. in the Israel region, the Sahara (also combined with a greenish haze) or Hawaii.
IIRC Uufflakke advised to edit the HighClouds and HighCloudsNoise tgas.
In my installs I only found various Clouds and CloudsNoise tgas + one NightCloud tga in my _tex folder.
I made a windows search but couldn't find any HighClouds tgas.
A tip for a mod attempt would be very appreciated-otherwise carry on!
That desert smoke test by Uufflakke looks awesome!
