Tornado bearing storm
« on: May 12, 2011, 09:45:10 PM »

today we got a bad storm, I was in school working on my French in library on the computer, then, the power went out through out the whole town. it was 9 am at least, well into morning, but the clouds were so thick that it was practically night, and the rains were heavy, and the winds were fierce. the only light in the library were the Fluorescent emergency lights, and those were extremely dim you could only see in areas that were directly below the lights and 3 of 4 went out after awhile. then, it got very quite, you knew something would happen then it got loud again with wind, the power did come back on but only for a few minutes then it went out again until about 3rd hour of school. later i found out a tornado hit the next town over which is about 20 miles away.

you think this is dark?

well, this is darker (few minutes later)

here are emergency lights

I've been on the edges of a few tornadoes, and seen the aftermath of a few more. You know you're close to the funnel cloud when the sky turns dark greenish gray and there's a sound like a passing freight train. Based on your pictures, there might have been funnel clouds closer than you know. If they didn't touch down, or weren't fully formed, then it would take Doppler radar to know if they ever existed.

It's just luck that the funnel cloud that took out the town next to yours didn't take out your school. Given that there was a probably tornado warning for your area, I'm surprised your school didn't declare an emergency and get everyone into the basement or at least onto the ground floors away from the windows. If a tornado had hit your school, you could have been killed or injured by flying glass from broken windows, or debris hurled through the windows.
