Just had my Head in a Fairey Firefly FRI
« on: May 14, 2011, 11:36:33 AM »

Hey Guys,

I just dropped in at my local aviation museum this afternoon - Shearwater Aviation Museum at Shearwater Nova Scotia , Canada.

It's a small but tidy museum with displays focusing on the local service - RCN Marine Aviation. We have a Swordfish MkI which has flown (once in the last 10 years), but the current baby is a Fairey Firefly FR MkI which is undergoing reconstruction, with high hopes that it will be flyable.

Check it out! Engine turning over! - sorry Jafa, low RPMs only so far.

When I dropped in today they were working on the Rolls Griffon - it had some coolant leaks on the engine run up a few months ago, but they hope it will fly this season - ALL my fingers crossed.

Anyway I just dropped in and hung around while they were working on it and the engineer , John Webber (the same man who got theSwordfish flying) let me hop up on the wing and get my head in the cockpit.

I remember seeing it when I went to Nova Scotia in 09. The missus took me there because she knows Im a plane nut and they had the Swordfish, which funnily enough was when American was working on his, and was hoping to get pictures of the cockpit for him.

The Firefly was still in early stages then, fuselage was in place for the most part, and there was still alot of work to go, see if I can find any pics.

The Engineer (John Webber) loaned me a video of the Griffon Run-up.
If someone can tell me how to upload the file to SAS (in a simple non-techno manner) I'll do it. I'm listening to the Griffon idle right now.
The files are in   ".mov"  format. ---format file type corrected!!!

I shouldn't do that without the engineers permission, I think.
I know its silly but if it was just this site I think it would be ok.
I'll be away from home for about a week, but I'll ask when I get back.

Sorry fellows - I really want to share that griffon with you.
