AI Behavior
« on: May 18, 2011, 09:47:36 AM »

Occasionally, AI will do some amusing things. For example, I saw one AI pilot land and taxi a short distance from the runway. When he stopped, the his plane kept bouncing on its nose wheel. Also, the pilot opened the canopy. Normally, the only time a pilot opens the canopy is when they are preparing to land on a carrier. While the airstrip was on a small island, that's still not a carrier and the plane in question was not a carrier plane.

In the same mission, my wingman just went out on his own after I give the return to base command and flew back to the mainland, at tree top level. Eventually, it appeared that he was flying to a mainland base that I normally use on the this map, even though the final waypoint for my flight was on the island airstrip.

Eventually, he got within visual range of the mainland airbase, but ran out of fuel. He was too far from the airbase to land there and "decided" to ditch in a nearby river. Why in the river? Who could say? Because he ran out of fuel, I'll never know for sure whether or not he was going to land at an airbase other than the one I assigned. Probably, it was just a coincidence that he was lined up for an approach to an "alternate" airbase when he ran out of fuel.

Anyone had any amusing AI incidents lately?

Cheers,

Riptide

More or less amusing:

2 whole flights of chaika's crashing into 2 whole flights of zeros in a low altitude (1500m) furball head-on..
My own flight was the only surviving one, and I was there flying around oblivious wondering what the sudden radiochatter was.. :o

Looking into the direction of my former squaddies I could not believe my eyes.. 16 planes had crashed into eachother..

AI has it's quirks, dunno if they will ever be ironed out, but sometimes it's just funny. :)

Lack of spacial awareness, it's a curse; miles and miles of bloody air and several aircraft always seem to find the same spot at the same moment, and only ever in my flight. Still, it's the same for RoF: 5 camels having a go at a solitary Gotha. When we got it, i flew straight and level and slowly to allow them to reform. Glanced around - all fine. Glanced around a few minutes later and only one camel was anywhere to be seen, but serveral suspicious burning objects were dotted on the ground behind us. Bluddy marvellous... *rolls eyes*

Ah yes, the mysterious mid-airs. I know them well. In my case, they usually happen enroute to the target area. I start off with enough planes and end up being out numbered.

However based on what I have read, mechanical failures that were not uncommon in planes of at that time. So, I have made my "peace" with AI quirks, at least the mid-air collisions, by thinking of them as the game's way of minicing the impact of a mechanical failures. For example, I've read that when the U.S. would send up flighters from England, they would typically include an extra plane or so in the flight. If the flight reached the continent without problems, the extras would return to England at that point. I am sure the RAF did the same.

From what I have read, mid-air collisions weren't that common. Rough engines that eventually died were. Even brand new P-51D's were not above having gremlins running around inside the engine mucking up the spark plugs. Occasionally, a plane would just drop out of formation and crash for no apparent reason. Those were typically attributed to pilot blackout due to a failed oxygen supply.

In the early years of IL-2, there was another AI quirk that both annoyed and entertained me. After landing at the home base, occassionally, the tower would warn me to check my six as I was taxiing to parking. A spit second later, one of my own planes would collide with mine. The warning never came in time to me to act. This hasn't happened for a long time. So, it appears Ubisoft fixed it, maybe as far back as the Pacific Fighters release.

AI quirks, just more entertainment :).

Cheers,

Late war scenarios ending up in the Stratossphere.
Just take seat in a late Axis/Allied Fighter and try to hunt the opposite Allied/Axis, start at Zero alt and you end up in this spiral ****** spin in space all the time. One of the most annoying codes of AI since I play this game.

Oh damn this one is my biggest pet peeves. Even when its an aircraft they cant run away from, ie P47 Vs 109G, they still try running up and away. Freaking annoying.

My ai gunners used to warn me to break left or right, when i had a hun on my 6; now the lazy git never bothers. Just whines (maybe justifiably ^_^) about my flying.

I do wish the AI would get over their death defying dives.  I cheat, letting the AI fly most of the transit stuff, as they can keep engines cooler than I can manually.  Every once in a while, they ditch all that hard won altitude in one screaming full throttle dive that I can't hope to match manually, and can't take over from for fear of loosing some vital part.  They end it all with a massive pull out, dumping all that speed and ending up in a zero energy situation on the deck.  Gee.  Thanks guys.
