I'm including an example of what is available in Wings of Prey. Now, I am not comparing the two games, that's another issue, but I do wonder, as I read that there were suggestions of new Java coding, whether the Modders at SAS are really working with the possibility of taking IL2:1946 to the next level?

I remember the ongoing voyages of the Falcon 4.0 enterprise (yes that was a pun), and how it has been constantly modded. So, after reading that the Modders are now getting into the Java Coding, could true dynamic lighting be a thing of the future?

Currently the barely playable and crippled Cliffs of Dover reminds me of this scene (you'll see Cliffs of Dover arriving at 2m 11s)

then once the IL2:1946 players try it out, you can see the reaction that follows until 2m 51s !

Anyway, there has/have been many Mods for this series and I wonder if there may be a chance in the future (I am not expecting this level of detail I may add) that Dynamic Lighting could be added? I remember someone creating a Bloom Effect Mod a few years back, which, in a way was the first step forward to Lighting effects, but here's the example I mention showing what I hope could one-day be possible with the talented Modders here:

Cheers, MP

There are a few major issues in the way, I'll quickly list them in dot point:
a) We don't have the source code, that rules out most possibilities
b) Whilst the bloom worked for DirectX, Il-2 is primarily an OpenGL game
c) OpenGL programming is bloody difficult
d) We don't know any OpenGL programmers who are happy to work on outdated code for free
e) We don't have the source code.

We can do many wonderful things in Java, but completely re-write the rendering engine is something we can't do at this stage. It is really in the hands of TD, who at this stage, have not indicated any planes to update the games graphics.

The bloom is also an external mod you can apply to alot of games..

Google for ENB Series and you'll find it.
The one for IL2 is simply another adapted version :)
