Yes of course it's a silly cartoon but in your opinion is it a F-15 Eagle or is it a F-14 Tomcat?

F14 Tomcat, engines on F-15 are close together in between the vertical stabs. F14 has them under the vertical stab. The middle bit in between the engines is used for an airbrake. The F15 has a kind of spine and the airbrake is put there.

front canpy raming. The eagle has none
there is space for the Hook between the engines. on the F-15, the engines are next to each other
the rudders are mounted ON the engines. on the Eagle, they are mounted just outside
the gatling gun is absent...
the Delta shape aft of the engine intakes its rounded on the F-15

the main error of the picture consists in the "angle" of the intakes.
the Upper lip is horizontal on the eagle. on the tomcat it is inclined.

a quick google search solves the mystery.

inclination of the F-14 engine intake, wich is missing in the picture and could lead to confusion with the F-15

on the F-15, its horizontal

Clavin & Hobbes pic? the artwork is familiar....

As for Robotech/Macross/Gundam, they're are more inspired by the F14, also if your old enough to remember the original Transformers (80's) Autobot 'Jetfire' toy/figure/model was actually an Aerotech Valkirie with different coloured plastic and decals upon it.
