Pugachev's Cobra
« on: May 22, 2011, 07:48:20 PM »

Has anybody attempted this yet in IL-2 using maybe one of the F-86's or MiG-17's?

Shouldn't be possible. It is only the advanced aerodynamics of the SU-27 and similar aircraft (and probably the advanced fly-by-wire avionics too) that make them controllable at the 90-degree-plus AoA involved. I'm not sure that a F-86 or a MiG-17 could take the structural load either. Actually, though it is an impressive manouvre, it is probably of limited military use.

Yes I know it is theoretically impossible for such aircraft like these to do this, but IL-2 can do some pretty strange things, and for military uses it has very few but an example of one is that it is used to spoof doppler radar, however I would atleast like to see someone try it.

im not sure about the cobra..but the backflip is possible with mig-17 and sabre.

Turn off spins and stalls, get the aircraft going at full clip, cut throttle, pull straight up like your going to loop(but just stay at 90 degress) its a little more complex than that but you will eventually get the "feel'. I am too retarted to make in game vids or i would show this.

Turn off spins and stalls
With this setting the backflip is possible with any IL-2 aircraft providing enough thrust or horsepowers.

If we're talking about realistic aerodynamics (anything else might have any results, literally), you can't do a Cobra or Backflip with eiter Sabre or MiG, both will enter a flat spin after full stall.
The only difference between Sabre and MiG is that if this happens to you in a Sabre at sufficient altitude, you can lower your flaps, full push the stick, slowly increase throttle and full hit the pedals in opposite direction of your spin in order to get out of the flat spin.
In the MiG on the other hand your options are rather limited. You can either bail out or bail out.

I think I remember someone saying it's possible to do the cobra in the Me-163.

I guess a better question is if this type of maneuver is even possible in Il-2.  let's say if someone modded the Su-27 for example into IL-2 would it be possible to pull this stunt or is it too advanced for IL-2?

Well, if you pull up in any plane in IL-2, you go up, not forward. sadly :(

Has anyone tried it in the Lerche?

If there was a paddle prop'd Su25 with little more power, you should be able to almost 'hang' on the prop methinks. I believe the Learche can do a Cobra, if it handles smoothly and doesn't yaw/spin as the wing/controls stall, and your adept at throttle control.

Thats a point, forgive my naive questions to possible people who know more than myself concerning the game FM engine.
Do the control surfaces have the ability to stall ingame, or do they modify the wings drag, lift inertia, friction etc co-efficients to work or something?

There is a trick you can do in a sabre. Pull straight up, then when your stalling pull straight back. if you do that, u do about 5 or 6 barrel rolls before gaining speed :D ill post a video soon

I dont see to manny people get out of spins in migs but its verry possible, and i do it so my squad members wont track me with missiles.
