AC-47 "Spooky" Gunship Update
« on: June 08, 2011, 06:09:21 AM »

Checkyersix has kindly allowed me to post a 3d update to his excellent AC-47 mod,

which is here:

https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,6350.0.html

This update is based on the early AC-47s as they appeared in Vietnam

These featured 3 x SUU-11A/A 7.62mm gunpods on locally fabricated mountings.

The first and most famous was "Puff the Magic Dragon"

Once the idea was proven then they adopted the more familiar AC-47 Spooky scheme

Alternate scheme

Gunpod detail

Get the update here:

https://www.mediafire.com/file/4wrrq6odtf6uav1/Spooky.7z

Replace the existing CY6_AC-47 folder in your MODS folder with the download. There is also a skin pack to get you started.

Note - some of the new and reworked meshes will not map to existing C-47 skins

Enjoy,

 ;)

this is great work, but you might find me ungratefull for posting this:

I really have a hard time hitting a target while circling around it with the target sight. That or I need to tip my side angle unrealistically low.

Would it be possible to make it rather than controlling the guns from a static sight in the cockpit, from a second player view (the gunner manning the guns), and you could move the shooting angle using the mouse, like you would for a B17 side machine gunner for example?

I think this would make the shooting much more user friendly, probably more realistic as you could keep a good flight path and still change fire angles, finally it would be a hell of a feature for coop! I can already see myself flying over the jungle with my friend in the lower fuselage manning the gun, telling me to make another pass.

Any thoughts or comments?

poudijk: how was the AC-47 fired? how were the guns mounted? fixed or flexible? who was aiming? who pulled the trigger?

poudjik, it takes some practice, I know, but that's how the guns really worked. They weren't flexibly mounted, the pilot had to aim the whole plane to hit a target. The gunners in the rear just reloaded the guns and cleared jams. With some practice and a steady hand, you can hit targets consistently. Try aiming slightly "ahead" of what you're trying to hit, so that the recoil draws the gun backwards along your target.
