Hello Anatoli, nice to know you and the guys are still flying South Vietnam. 8)  I added a little update to the map which got rid of one of the river courses at the bottom of the map near Saigon to get rid of some of that awefull tiling, sadly couldn't get rid of the bit right on the coast but if you don't get too close and have inclement weather set it isn't as noticable. ;)

The fix is here:

https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,19034.0.html

A few pics appear near the end of the thread.

I'm not sure quite how much detail I'll add to the ag_Viet_Minh yet, but RC-4 will definately be added.  The first priority will be road and rail from Hanoi to Lang Son, and then onward to the border and obviously an airfield, most likely just a grass strip, although I don't yet know where or in which direction it will be orientated.  Hopefully you will be able to help there.

Dien Bien Phu has already been added to the map by CzechTexan, so I won't need to add that most important landmark of this area.

Just took a look at the mission, superb as always, thanks for the link. :)

Bye the way, have any of the French community actually built a offline campaign for South Vietnam, would be great to have a link if they have.  No need to translate the briefings.

Wishing you all the very best, Pete. ;D

Glad to see you working on an update to this map.  I didn't do much to Dien Bien Phu, it's just a place on the map.  It'd be great if someone could populate the French positions or maybe use different texture there.  I tested all airfields, landing/takeoff with fighter planes; larger fields tested with bombers.  Some af were pretty difficult due to the mountainous terrain.

I think the download package includes several textures that were not used but could be used or altered for future updates.  Or perhaps make your own new textures?
Anyway, the basic foundations have been laid for this rugged looking map.  A little more fine tuning and it will be a gem.

Hi ...  :)

On the following film, at about 7 minutes, there are some very interesting views of Dong Khé military base and airfield (located not far away from Lang Son), along the RC4...

And here is an aerial photo of the same place, taken in 1950 :

Interesting to notice how strategic was that place in the RC4 network...

Hello CzechTexan, the intention I have is mainly to add road, rail and detail only where absolutely necessary to enable mission builders to create some of the major actions that took place in this region.  You've done a superb job with the defences and runway at at Dien Bien Phu so it is probably best left to mission builders to super detail there.  I can look at the textures, possibly using some from my South Vietnam map, Agracier's look a little too Chinese for my liking so there may be a mixture of both, we'll have to see.

The map is superb as it stands, I don't think I can do a great deal to improve on it as it is, but there are certain ommissions I will try and put right.

My map builder struggles with this map even though I've altered the settings so I may be limited anyway in what I can accomplish.

The main focus will be on detailing Lang Son to represent it during 1940 when French forces clashed there with the Japanese, so it will need the road and rail network passing through as well as an airfield.

As RC-4 runs along the border near Lang Son that will need be to added to represent the later conflict with the Viet Minh.

Hello Anatoli, thank you very much for the links.  The airfield you mention I would think was built to supply that particular stronghold, the airfield during the 1940's was actually in or on the outskirts of Lang Son, where is the question.  Obviously if the terrain allows the one at Dong Khe can be added as well.

As for the camp, that is your speciality. ;)

Wishing you all the very best, Pete. ;D

Ok for Dong Khé...  ;)

I got some infos about the Lang Son airfield : I have its exact location as it was in 1940, and a few (bad quality!) photos... I need to scan them in order to give them to you. I am still looking for more plans/photos...

As I was looking for these informations, I found photos (good quality, this time...) of Haïphong Cat-Bi and Hanoï Gia-Lam / Bach-Maï airfields...

It gave me some ideas...  ;) :D

Cheers

Did you happen to alter the textures to "indexed" instead of RGB?  This was discussed on the first page of this thread.  Indexed  uses less memory.

Hello Anatoli, glad you've found the info for the 1940 airfield, I searched high and low for a photograph or plan when I did the Vichy Indochina campaign but found only references to its existence, nothing regarding exact location other than it was somewhere in/at Lang Son. I built a airfield on the Thailand map using one of the runways in ships at the time and I always wanted to add it properly to a map.  I was originally going to build a map of Nort Vietnam but Kirby uploaded the China starter pack with South Vietnam at the time so I went with that.  The rest is history. ;)

When this map was released by CzechTexan and Agracier I'd hoped the airfield would be on it but it wasn't so I'm finally going to try and put that right and hopefully update the Vichy campaign with a correctly placed airfield and all the new mod aircraft that have appeared since. :)

Hello CzechTexan, I indexed the two ed maps but nearly all the textures were already indexed, and the ones that weren't I did.  Boomer was always getting very cross with us for not doing it so now I look at any set of textures when I downlod the map. ;)

I think it is the shear size of the map that causes the problem, Thailand was the same. :'(

Wishing you all the very best, Pete. ;D

Am glad this map is being worked on! Especially Lang Son. I am making a campaign where the Lang Son incident was viewed from the Japanese perspective. I will better hold the work and wait for the outcome of this.

Hello Tom, not sure I can give you an ETA on this one, the river is in but haven't really had time to do much else with Lang Son this week, at the moment I'm working on a template which was on the bench first up. ;)

I feel there will be minimal changes at the moment, unfortunately I have a habit of getting a little too involved in a project.

Wishing you all the very best, Pete. ;D
