a question about a plane
« on: June 12, 2011, 10:28:00 PM »

Just asking if it would be possible for a SR-71 to be flyable in IL-2, specifically if the games engine could fly a plane past mach 3.

Well it wasn't used for anything except for reconnaissance, but I wanted to see it in the game because its my favorite plane. I'm a decent 3D modeler and would be willing to make all of the 3D stuff. Just wanting to know if it would be possible...cause it would suck to waste all that time modeling for nothing.

Why not, it is my favorite plane, and I have the ability and initiative to build it... unlike many on here who would have just requested the aircraft...

So how hard would it be to fix the high altitude problem?

good for you. if it is ever finished it will be fun to inspect some big beautifull maps with it :) we already have a rocket/scramjet combination plane in the game, so the coding for the scramjet kick-in of the sr71 is realy already there.

and, the pleasure is not only in finishing a mod, but in making it and learning from it. finishing it is optional.

dont worry about the altitude problems or the game engine right now. no one is anyway going to bother with it untill there is actualy a plane that requires it.

But, with the new edition of radar inside the game, the SR-71 could be used as radar by flying high over enemy terrority, letting the friendly aircraft get a fix on the enemy aircraft, and the enemy planes wont even know were the friendly fighters are (unless there getting info from ground radar, but still after they escape the range of ground radar, they have lost them)

This is something that I would like to know as well.

And as for the radar situation, that's what the SR-71 was built for...to give the US a strategic advantage over the Soviets.
