This is normal!
You can not open these files.
They must be converted (tga to tga !).
See here (I did not test this version) :

ok thanks, this works.

I'm not very sure how to use the SFS Extractor though. I have a filelist.txt created by another tool but when I import it in SFS Extractor nothing happens. I just see an empty list. Sorry but I'm a newbie in all this.

Complete noob with modding but I'd like to try.
What are the basic steps I need to extact a figure (i.e. a soldier figure from Objects) so that I can create and 'skins' a ground crew person?  I'm hoping to try and create some generic ground crew figures to add some life to the allied airfields.  I've seen the german ground crew mod (excellent) but haven't seen any allied version.

The models in-game are rather useless to use as a 'base' for what you want, and would be better made from scratch.
But to answer your question, all you have to do is open each SFS file till you find the Meshes you want.

Thanks for the info.  I've dabbled with Blender and making 3D models but it's not an intuitive program and I am a complete beginner.
Are there more user-friendly 3D modelling programs out there (preferably freeware but not essential)?

Google Gmax, it's an earlier freeware version of Autodesk 3ds max. So therefore all the tools work with it for exporting/importing etc.

I downloaded the extractor but when I extract, it tells me the .lst file is corrupt. I don't see any other complaints about this, so I wonder what I missed.

Also, is there any kind of guide or help for usage (the extractor exe seems to open just fine)

I'm a total novice at modding and run UP3. I've set my sights on learning to mod the map geography. I got the map editor toolbox and understand the process, I guess I just need to learn how to use this tool so I can find the map I want and get the modded version back into a file I can load it from (?)

If anyone can process my gibberish and point me down the proper path, I'll get totally smashed and be very obnoxious at your wedding. NO! I mean I'd greatly appreciate it!

How Strange!

Could you add a screenshot of the message saying that the files.lst is corrupt?

Why don't you edit with notepad or another text editor the files.lst itself and copy the first and last 20 lines here to see if something is wrong?

  Regards,
                          Pablo

I feel like an idiot, but sure I'll be happy to post a screen shot if you tell me how.

I just tried again with same result. A little windo pops up ("Archive CRC error")
in the body of the window is a red button with white 'X' and the following text  "Archive file"SFSExtractV31\SFSExtract.lst" CRC integrity test failed. The archive file is corrupted and cannot be opened"

I hit "print screen" but I don't know where the screenshot saves to...

Perhaps a dumb question here, but should I have extracted into my game folder?

Imagine an egg.

I know as much about this stuff as the egg knows about its daddy

The screenshot doesn't save anywhere, you have to do that. After you've pressed the print screen button go to start-All Programs-Accessories-Paint, once you have paint open press Ctrl+V then save your screenshot as a JPEG file to your desktop.
