Internet download speeds
« on: June 20, 2011, 04:20:24 AM »

Please forgive the repeat, just hopeful of a quick fix or a quick "give up"  ;)

Hi all,

As a bit of quick background, I'm not the most technically minded of people (though after a decade of Il-2 and a good couple of years of playing with mods I'm fairly comfy with the actual installation of mods, finally  8) ) and only get to fly for a few days at a time a few times a year. So what time I do have available for the sim is pretty valuable to me!

I'm in the midsts of downloading UP3, and have been having trouble with internet/download speeds. I first tried to torrent it as that worked great with UP2...but was getting speeds of 6-10kB/s so after two hours I stopped and switched to static downloads. This seemed a wise move, as the longest time to wait was about 10 hours (rather than the torrents' 10+ days)...but having left my computer on and downloading overnight, I return to find non of the packs finished and speeds in the 3-7 kB/s range (which I'm not sure I believe as it appears that in reality nothing is happening at all). A quick test of the RoF demo download gives a steady 290-300 kB/s.

My question is: am I doing something wrong? Is there something I can do, or stop doing, to get decent speeds back on the UP3 packs, or even on the torrent? I've tried pausing and restarting the downloads, but am nervous of anything more drastic till I've got some advice!

Apologies is there's nothing to be done, just wanted to check there was nothing I could do other than sit tight, shut up and wait  ::)

Screwy

ps. As people who know more might have guessed, even the download speeds I'm getting seem to be in name only. A predicted completion time of 10 minutes is still 10 mins after 2 hours have passed...

I have noticed similar myself so far, but I am sticking with my utorrent as I'm upto around 52%, but then I haven't been downloading continuously as my flatmate is a WoW gamer & BT Broadband account holder.

Thinking of double checking the dl..., Mods, what might be the hashcalc/checksum for a 'perfect' dl of UP3?

Well, my router decided to make things easier by resetting itself this evening (after a day in which it oversaw the downloading of about 10MB I can't say this was too worrying!) so will have another crack at the torrent in the morning.

Still, any hints/tips on do's and don'ts to get the most out of available bandwidth would be appreciated :)

Blues skies,

For what its worth, you need to consider that when using Torrent you are relying on other users being online. It took just over 3 hours for me to download UP 3.0 last night. I started just after midnight so not to hog bandwidth on a shared WiFi hub, and uTorrent indicated that much of the data was coming from the US, which makes sense, as few people this side of the pond (I'm in the UK) keep the same hours as me.

Download/upload speeds depend on alot of different factors. Your line limit, your isp limit, your isp (whether they'll even allow you access to a torrent program), the number of seeders vs. leechers, whether or not the seeders have their upload speeds capped... the list goes on and on.

Best advice on torrents is to make sure you have the correct port settings (usually find information on the host site for this). Have your download speed uncapped (unlimited), and upload speed either unlimited, or if that interferes with download speeds, set your upload speed to half of your max upload line rate (can usually be found on your bill). Usually, the download will start off slow, but as you pick up more seeds, and download more blocks of the torrent file, you will download faster. Some torrent sites have it set where the more you seed (upload), the faster you are allowed to download. This deters leeching, and grab and goes (people who register to download one file, then never seed or return). Also, depending on your line limit and processor strength, you may just want to leave your PC alone while downloading a torrent. Surfing the internet uses bandwidth and processor power that could be used for the torrent.

Personally I'm using a Smell brand 6400 Inspiron laptop, Smell Broadcom WIFI to BT Homehub + WIFI (average connection speed @home 38 - 54 Mbps or Mb/sec) and Utorrent 2.0.4. my UP_3-RC, is at 62.8%

I admit to having my torrent upload restricted to 10 - 25 kbs to save maxing my broadband limit - but I do have extra slots enagled to downloaders when there's clearer 'weather' (less internet traffic) on the net.

Speeds also depend on your place within the network node map; your home to local to national networks connection layouts, types, infrastructure choices, cabling specs in between, local town/are/region etc internet traffic 'culture'/habits of usage and how that all inter relates world wide in some way too.
There are some settings/advice on the net for improving connections, but you have to get really techy and know stuff about sub-routines, modem/wifi bios editing &/or bios coding.
Thats assuming you can locate such info from reputably clean/trusted/respected sites or have such info allowed in you country before implimenting those sort of tweeks.
There are some port settings any minor stuff that can be tweeked in you torrent program to assist speeds, but I don't alter much or know them - a freind of mine set up my settings explaining them at the time, but that was a few years back.

Frictions right on the money with what he says, less open/running programs is best - you might be able to set what times to automatically switch on & off downloads between certain chosen times. I find personly that I get my best speeds in Birmingham, around 3am - 5am, ...or when my flatmate isn't playing WoW.

Hypertheoretically, assuming your national culture goes generally to sleep at 10pm, net traffic droping off by say, 1/5, its internet culture will largely still be going through to maybe 01am where another 1/5 goes to sleep.
At least 1/5 never disconnects without reason, the rest float in and out and, or are from different timezones/networks, scheduled/user-selected-automatic-program-functions/connections, bususiness networks & multi noded/hubbed networks, national systems/organisations and all ther rest.
