Combat Boxes
« on: June 21, 2011, 03:46:31 PM »

From the early days of il-2 up to now it's almost impossible to create really realistic heavy bomber formations. Before 4.10 it was impossible because an ai aircraft's cruise speed relied on its flight height so the lower or higher flying aircraft were faster or slower. Now after 4.10 you can simply create a formation with the "set target" tool in fmb but if the leading plane gets hit in a special way it will slowly crash into the ground and the whole formation will try to follow it until it actually crashed.

My idea is that the speeds for some ai bombers like the B-17 at the heights from like 7 to 10 km should be equalized. If every bomber in the formation would fly at the same speed it would be easy to set up big bomber formations without the problem that all bombers follow a damaged one.

say me what you think about it^^

that means that all damaged bombers that are unable to keep the speed (and altitude?) drop out of formation, and the rest of the formation does ignore the speed change, they just keep on flying their path...

i think defining "speed" only, to decide whether a leading b-17 must be followed or not is not enough.
"damage level" or "critical damage" should be considered too.

damage level: too many wing holes, leader loses altitude, hands control to Number 2, squadron follows N°2.
critical damage: engine on fire, one side elevator shot off, ailerons out of service, leader hands control to N°2 and drops out of formation?

difficult subject...

Just a quick idea:

What if we had an invisible, indistructable and impotent dummy object (=aircraft) that would become the lead airplane the formation is targeted at...

my idea doesn't need ai changes ...

if every plane between for example 7 and 10 km cruises at the same speed you just need to add as many single planes as you want and there is the formation. there's no need for an ai that notices: "no 1 is hit and drops out of formation so no 2 must lead"

but changing the ai so that damaged planes leave the formation and so on sure is better :P

So completely remove different airspeed based on altitude?

no just a few ones of ai bombers like b-17 and b-24 which flew in combat boxes and only at some heights.
