Amnesia : The Dark Descent
« on: June 27, 2011, 07:37:32 AM »

Just started playing out this game and actually it is very scary . Not to be played in the night . Better take your pc in your garden/balkony in the middle of the day , to be sure not to have nightmares (or even daymares) . It is not like the other scary games ; this one actually rages psychological war on you!

Then , after playing see the reactions of others !

To me the Best atmospheric "thriller" game was Konami's Silent Hill series. Nothing can beat it IMHO.

Brilliant series, especially the first three. The forth was good but let down by game design (every area a series of box-like rooms, even the 'outdoor' sections), and it kinda forgot a lot of what made the first 3 so good in later sequals. Nonetheless as HaDeS says, it was a smashingly atmoshperic horror series that liked to mess with you psychologically as traditional horror stuff. Cannot rave about the series enough really.

F.E.A.R. was very effective. Especially played in total darkness. Give me chills up my back many times.

Yes but you can fight in these games . In Amnesia you can not . You can only hide in the dark in order not to be killed . You do not carry any arms . Furthermore it is not the you turn around the corner to find dozens of monsters against you . It is that you expect only one to appear down the alleway you are walking that is scary . Plus all the sanity stuff that causes auditory and visual hallucinations. It's not traditional .

FEAR 1 was good, and a number of other games had good moments of suspense or fright, even the Half-Life ones to some extent, but the number one most scary game I ever played, and this one actually made my heart race with adrenaline and jump as I was attacked (I think I even had a dream or two way back about it) was AvP (the original). Specifically, it was AvP playing the Marine campaign.

Something about the atmosphere, knowing what the bugs could do, losing night vision when you wanted the motion detector and vice versa, having almost NO save points! (I think lack of save points was annoying at first then when I got used to it after the first mission, it really added to the sense of urgency, the motivation to stay alive...)

Doom3 tried, but bless its heart I was just never scared. Not like AvP scared me.
