Retiring from Freestanding Modding
« on: June 27, 2011, 07:44:21 AM »

Hi Guys

I have some issues with free time, and, while I seldom have really pressing personal matters to divert me, I think the time has come for me to step aside on some fronts, just for reasons of personal sanity and enjoyment of the game.

I am retiring from "Freestanding" modding. That is, I am no longer going to make or update mods that are available in separated form. Many of my mods or mods I posted back in 4.09, are still un-updated in their threads, but updated versions are available in the 4.101 modpacks. Other I am updating with the sole intention of putting them into my personal DBW install, and thus later in an official DBW update perhaps. There is in any case not much of importance of mine that is not in there already.

I am from now on only going to be involved in DBW and it's support and expansion, and the UP3 developments relating to it. All mods I do or update will be done to package into DBW. I will still also manage the housekeeping of the forum and servers, and any other responsibilities as co-owner of this forum, and I will continue to update SAS Buttons and selector threads.

There will be a patch add-on to the SAS Modact in a while, after which it will not be updated again until the IL2 landscape requires it.

I am stepping back from everything else. I have to.

Now, regarding my old mods that are still on the site, I have no problems for any enterprising young modder to extract updates of these from packs as they become available, for updating the separate mod threads here, if needed.

I have always been a dedicated offline player, and my wish has always been to have a "complete" modded offline IL2 install that rocks. That is the reason I got into modding, the reason for this site, and for most everything I did in between. I fully supported freestanding modding in the past, where there was no difference between making one's own "pack" and downloading one of another. But these days there is a difference, a BIG one, and for an offline player like me to not take advantage of that, would be stupid in the extreme. This lead to the creation of DBW, as soon as the opportunity arose.

With DBW, this "dream" install is now within reach, and it is starting, to me, to seem more and more pointless to spend time on anything else.

As for the "leadership" of this site, I never really saw myself in that role, and I am in any event for a long time not the sole "owner/editor" of SAS anymore. Malone and Anto are both in that. I always encouraged guys to do as they please, within a few ethical and etiquette related limits.
I see no reason why that cannot continue. I never had any intentions or expectations of having any kind of influential role in the world of IL2, and those that saw that in me, were only seeing a sad reflection of themselves.

I only wanted to have a great game, and I think I am now on track to it, and that has made the noise of everything else a little lower in volume. I am going to make for myself my ultimate offline IL2, and those who want the same are welcome to join me in it. Those not interested will hopefully not see so much of me anymore. :)

All the best

I, and I suspect that I speak for many, will miss your ' Freestanding Modding', but glad that you'll still be around.

Thanks for all your great work - Redfox

so, you are moving away from the scene, and wish to act more behind the curtains...

better channeling and managing your energies...

I respect you for such clear train of thought - and making these necessary decisions.
Good on ya, CirX

As a fellow retiree I understand completely why you need to step back. Hope you find more time to do the things you love.

Thanks for all the hard work and dedication over the years, CirX. You've helped a lot of new modders find their wings.

Salute,

CY6.

Sounds like a great idea actually... less variations of mod packs, and more focus on the one you enjoy most.. Thanks for all your hard work.

Glad your going to keep working on DBW.  I'm about to install it tonight, as I was on a week-long il-2 1946 retirement while I was in California  :)  Thanks so much for all your work up until now!
