It is very interesting to follow the story of the pilot. Check the BBC link in this article. I never knew that the Irish interned both allies and Germans due to their neutrality. They even played football together during the war. It sounds like a safe way to spend the war.

Yeah but secretly we let a lot of the british pilots walk out of the internment camps and head on home. :D It was De Valera's biased neutrality. We kept the planes though. There is a lovely twin seat spitfire in service that was rebuilt using parts found in ireland. Also the wreckage of a FW-200 Condor is sitting on top of mt Brandon. the local pub ahve one of the engines on display outside I believe :P
