Tried playing without the atioglxx.dll and it is actually worse than 11.11 flickering rivers, blocky sand where there should not be sand etc. I officially give up on AMD and any new drivers - go the green !!!! >:(

I feel your pain. Planned to integrate the HD6870 to be able to upgrade my monitor in spring without spending 300-400 bucks for a higher end card and the result was disappointing.
Happy back to my 5770. I compared some benchmarks with the Gigabyte GTX 460 OC vs my card and in most regimes the relatively cheap (same price aka 150 Euros) NVidia card busted mine. But still below an HD 5850 on some benchs, so consequently I would rather envy/congrat those gents whose cards work with the new Radeon drivers and give a last advice (wise-ass) to this thread:
It's not the card only, regardless of driver fubar in IL-2, I tried the HD 6870 in another sim and the FPS gain was totally a joke. I assume the RAM (I use only 3 GB-no dual channel) and mobo power decides how much power you will get-in my case the mobo clearly f*cks the otherwise decent system (AMD Quadcore, Kingston RAM etc.-no cheap parts). ;D

Good Luck

PS:
If anyone by chance reads this and uses the GTX 640 with XP in IL-2, please send me a small pm and tell me how it works for you. I can only say my HD 5770 works very fine but over populated areas or in heavy fights FPS decrease-and I think that may be RAM related as well. Thanks! :D

Flight simulators need more CPU and RAM than GPU.
So, if you buy a better GPU card, maybe your CPU or your RAM (RAM is not a problem for 1946) are the bottleneck of your system.
You will see better FPS with a new GPU card in first person shooter games, because they need more GPU than CPU.

Not quite.
I've been running a lot of combinations, from very weak CPU with reasonable GPU (P4 2.6 GHz with ATI 4670 AGP) to good CPU with very weak GPU (i7-920 with Nvidia G210) and regardless which part is too slow, it will always ruin the full rack. "Each to his own" yes, it always depends on what you're planning to do with that particular machine.
I'm running a well balanced system too (i5-2500K with Nvidia GTX-550Ti) and that one runs IL-2 about 20 times as fast as the other two mentioned above.

As for the ATI cards, I've been running both ATI and Nvidia cards on the very same system several times.
ATI always gave me a headache with their drivers, the missing option to run different windows with different 3D settings in parallel (e.g. Anti Aliasing, on ATI without special "tricks" you have to set this system-wide, whereas Nvidia applies this setting per window, useful when switching between game and Java IDE window during mod development), untraceable crashes down to whole system non-bootable due to boot-time BSODs and the like.
I never encountered any of those issues with Nvidia. The worst I see with Nvidia cards about once a month is that some system for some reason (don't ask me why) at a given time puts a notification into system tray that the GPU driver crashed and had to be restartet - lol I didn't even notice that: The Nvidia driver restarts without any glitch where ATI drivers used to crash the whole system without further notice.

The backflip is that generally Nvidia cards were a little slower than their ATI counterparts on same price level and if the ATI card ran fine, the image quality was real stunning, quite beyond what I managed to squeeze out of Nvidia driver settings, this particularly comes true to shadows and Anti Aliasing.

So if your ATI card runs fine, don't touch anything and consider yourself a lucky fellow.
If not, better opt for an Nvidia card if you don't like fiddling your system, especially IL-2 likes Nvidia cards much more than ATI cards.

Best regards - Mike

AMD dont just have problems with Il-2, I have a couple of old games (Conflict Vietnam is one) that dont even start with AMD installed. Put my old 8800GTS in and away they go, this card also does a better job with IL2 but not so well with the newer games. Will save my pennies and upgrade to the latest Nvidia when I can.

Ratsel;

Thank you I will try your settings when I can and let you know.

This I don't get. I have alot of openGL games too, without problems. My N64 emulator runs faster/ much better graphics too.

I put my old HD4650 card back in just too see, it worked with the 12.1 drivers. Just like my HD6570 does. FPS & textures are much better with the 6570 though.

But yes please post if it works. If not I'll give you my atioglxx.dll for you to try ( make sure only one working ati dll in il-2 directory).

My first ATI card was a 4870 X2, this was a faulty piece of crap thar never ran properly - it idled at 80 degrees celsius and it would not render 'perfect' settings in Il-2, it was replaced under warranty with a 5870 which was much better but neither card would run Conflict Vietnam. The game would go as far as the start menu and no further. Havent actually tried the 6970 yet but getting sick of tweaking and fiddling all the time - just want to play games. Also had an ASUS built Nvidia 7900 GTX that was also crap come to think of it. Seems like every other computer component I buy is faulty and has to be replaced, faulty motherboard, UPS - the list goes on and none of these replacements happened overnight of course, a wait of 2 to 3 months was involved. >:(

Ratsel;

Your settings look pretty good but a little laggy over built up areas in particular like the Berlin map. Had to change  ProcessAffinityMask though  :)

Tried the 11.12 drivers, and problems straight away with the flickering/disappearing water. I came across this thread while searching for others with ATI driver problems with IL2. I tried all the workarounds mentioned, editing the conf. and pasting the appropriate .dll's in the main IL2 folder. The only thing that so far has worked, is pasting the 11.5 .dll in the main folder.

                        It's funny, that just this sim had a problem with the new driver. Even BOB2WOV which I believe is an older sim, ran and looked great. I must admit though, that now that I got the sim running, I kind of like these drivers. I especially like the color temp. More "cooler" mellow look now. The old saying is definitly correct: "If it aint broke, don't fix it"!
