I would imagine it would have been more ubiquitous like a hurri or messer.

It was defiantly either the P-51 (9-1 kill ratio) or the F6F Hellcat (14-1). Also, can someone fix the mustang's FM, because it is seriously messed up. It should be wayyy better than the ME-109. if you even pull up in the mustang, it spins out of control

Lower your joystick settings. I can't remember where i read this, but it pertained to realistic joystick settings for IL-2. I'm not sure what his name was but i remember that he had piloted in several WW2 planes. Anyways he said that the most realistic setting in his opinion was around maxed around 35. I keep mine maxed at 65, which is were i feel that all planes fly best...except for jets which I have at 80, but anyways back on topic.

you will never find out which plane had how many kills, "damaged" "probable" and so on, forget that.

the full truth is not known, especially not for the axis side with much documentation lost or destroyed on purpose.

Also, the Mustang flight model is fine, if your flying with 100% fuel, she does fun and interesting things.

2) Now don't come up with me with the "I can't handle the Mustang, so FM is wrong" story. Unless you provide test results in game compared with actual test in real life, don't start whining. I mean, suppose I want to "fix it" for you... what exactly am I supposed to fix?
+10 ;).

I fly standard P-51D in aerobatics and FM is quite well, not perfect of course, it have wrong details (like radiator open producing drag, but it's a detail), but overall it's quite well. If you fly it at 1000 m and you want to beat a 109 the problem is on you mate, not FM, Mustang is not intended fot that. Try to fight a 109 at 7000+ m and see if you defeat 109 or not ;). That's the real thing mate, not much fix needed. And I think in fact there are yet new models with new FMs, so that's your fix.

P-51 is a pig with 100% fuel, because it was designed as long-range escort fighter, take only 50%. The Mustang was never a good dogfighter but hey, it's not the Jug :)) Keep the speed high and you can survive in dogfight against anything (my favourite game is dogfighting against Zero at tree level. Yo-yo and lag-pursuit are the key to win). The low speed characteristics are indeed worse than other fighters, but on the other hand you have a very effective rudder. Use it to effect.
The only thing where P-51 doesn't shine is its climb rate. Fighting against AI 109 is sometimes quite frustrating.

Already had it. The fact is: Bf-109 outclimbs the Mustang at low and medium altitude. Shot down many Mustang in 109 using this trick. Up high there's nowhere to climb and 109 is dead meat :))

If you are talking real life then the Bf109 I believe had the most kills, if simply because it fought the entire war on many fronts.
