The RAF used several different versions of the B-17. They started with the B-17C (Fortress I) although it was a disaster and quickly withdrawn. Coastal Command used the B-17E (Fortress IIa) and F (Fortress II). No, that's not a typo, the earlier version had the "a" added on... Last in RAF service was the B-17G (Fortress III), which was used mainly by 100 Group of Bomber command as nighttime "snoopers" and electronic warfare aircraft.

few different variants there starting at the bottom looks like a standard b-17 D, above that another D. Next  is a coastal command F model. The 2nd from top is the really interesting one with the square chin, I found a photo of HB809 and it shows the plane pre modification landing in Denver. That nose is shape change is a H2S radar I believe.

Can anybody tell me more about the Fortress IIa with Vickers Gun? (missions etc) Was this a Anti-UBoat version or something else? Reminds of the He-177 with heavy forward gun in lower-nose section. Not so many heavy planes had this.

according to a book I own about Costal command B-17 this is a variant used for anti-submarine duty in smal  I have reread this numbers.

If You are interested I cn give You more Infos.. ?!
