The Arado was included in an official patch. So while it was 3rd party, it isn't a mod in the traditional sense.

From memory, I think either the Spitfire Mk I or Hurricane Mk IID at AAA were the first aircraft mods available.

I remember a long way back stopping playing il2 just around the time that some dude called qtim had allegedly cracked the sfs file system but wouldnt release it for public. I cam back to the game a year later and whoooooa! I was flying a b-29.... nuff said! :D the mod community has instilled a passion in me for flying. dont think id still be playing il2 if it wasnt for AAA in the beginning

The first IL-2 mod ever is the one changing screenshot file from TGA to JPEG. Then came the AAA sound mod with many non-flyable AC made flyable using existing cockpits, some very nicely done cockpit reskin and cloud mod. The firsts aircraft with modified 3D-model were the Beafighter with rear gunner, FW-190D-15 and Spitfire Mk.1. One of the first maps ever was the modified Normandy map with a small British coast. Those were good old days when discussing about FM was tantamount to high treason and the request section was full of really important aircrafts, not just prototype and UFO as we have today :))

If my memory doesn't fail me, Spitfire Mk.I was released at AAA in March 2008 as first NEW SLOT aircraft for v. 4.08m. Before it I remember a number of slot-replacement frankenplanes, like Ranwers's Cant-1007Z, PZL-37 Los and Hs-123. The first alphas of Spit Mk.I were slot-replacement too. I also know that there were a number of mods for 4.05m (incl. an experiment of transforming Tu-2 to helicopter), but I began to use mods only in January 2008 and missed early stages of Il-2 modding.

Does anyone remember how, in those early days, SimHQ and other prominent sites removed all mention of Il2 modding links and hid the name All Aircraft Arcade?  To find the AAA website was a real piece of detective work, searching through posts for a hint of what it was even called.  When I found it at last I felt a great sense of achievement just registering!

To many of us SAS1946 symbolises freedom of expression, you mavericks!
