I was flying a patrol mission in DBW today- when I looked back, all four AI wingmen were cruising beside me, and then when I looked again a few minutes later, they were gone, chasing after some bomber they had spotted. When this happened, I had no notification of it, and when I figured out what had happened, I had absolutely no way of knowing which way they had gone.
Bomber AI and the like already announce bogeys and clock position, and if you are flying under an AI flight leader he will call out contacts as he goes to engage. But none of this happens if you are leading a group of fighters.
As it is, we can tell the AI to attack certain things, rejoin us, or return to base, and that's about it. Pretty much every other combat sim I fly has some option to ask your wingmen "where are you" or "what are you doing" or "status?" Might it be possible to use some sort of Command-and-Control type mod to accomplish this, where your wingmen keep you a bit more informed of what they see and what's going on? THis also applies when you're flying under the AI's command- I've been playing some of PhilK's mudmoving-oriented campaigns, where you fly at the lowest rank, and you have no clue what's going on if you're separated from your flight, and can't ask your leader where he is. Sometimes I get the "mission complete, let's go home message," and sometimes the AI decides to head off without telling me.
Also, one thing I hate about the AI communications, especially in large battles, is that the only way to refer to someone is "one" "two" --- "sixteen", and if the AI talking is not in your flight, they're still heard as "one" "two" "three", which makes things very confusing. Is there some way that you only hear the members of your flight, or to make it more apparent who is talking and who is being talked to?
thanks
