Installing DBW Possible Solution
« on: July 19, 2011, 05:55:47 AM »

Hello all,

First of all, let me thank all of those that have created, tested, worked on, and in everyway been a part of developing and delivering DBW to us. As an offline gamer of the entire IL2 series, this is I hope going to keep me flying for sometime to come. Thank all of you.

For all of you that are having a problem installing DBW, I may have found a solution. After about 10 installs and uninstalls, it finally worked for me.

I followed the directions here https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,16539.0.html to the letter. About 10 times. I then saw where someone posted directions on turning on logging.  I ended up saving the log.lst each time I installed and renamed each time so that I would have a record.

I started all over, with a backup of 4.101 that I have.

I installed UP3RC with all updates through RC3. Again, everything worked with the stock game, and UP. The only difficulty I experienced was one time UP didnt want to start. I replaced the buttons file and the launcher with the latest version, and UP was working.

As soon as I installed DBW 1.1,  it refused to start, but this time I had a log to look at. I found this sort of error many times in the log.

ERROR sfs: SFS library (SAS_DBW/dbw_planes_02.sfs) NOT Mounted: No such file or directory: SAS_DBW/dbw_planes_02.sfs
ERROR sfs: SFS library (SAS_DBW/dbw_planes_03.sfs) NOT Mounted: No such file or directory: SAS_DBW/dbw_planes_03.sfs

It has many of those sorts of errors including cockpits, sounds, etc etc etc.

Then I extracted all of the DBW 1.1, DBW 1.2, DBW 1.3 to their own folders. None of the files that the log showed missing was in any of the folders. I know that the files were not corrupted, as I checked the MD5 & CRC of the files immediately after downloading. But I checked them again. All the files were correct.

Now to the solution that Worked for me.

I still had DBW 1.0 that I had downloaded, but had never installed. By the time I did get around to installing, I went straight to the DBW 1.1 directly as directed on the download page listed above. So I looked inside the DBW 1.0 and there were the missing files from the SAS_DBW folder.

I copy and pasted all of the sfs files from the DBW 1.0/SAS_DBW folder to my install directory/SAS_DBW folder.

This is really important.

DO NOT OVERWRITE any files. Just let it put the files (place holders) that do not exist. But DO NOT OVERWRITE anything.

After I did that, DBW 1.1,  DBW 1.2, and DBW 1.3 all worked.

In short, follow to the letter the directions at the dowload page, just after you install DBW 1.1, copy over the missing files from the DBW 1.0/SAS_DBW folder.

I have not done a lot of testing and this may not be the way it is suppose to be done, and if someone could elaborate a better way of doing it, I wont be insulted at all. I just wanted to recount for those that cant get it to work, what worked for me.

Also, I want to say, that if someone did make a simple mistake and leave the files out, I am not trying to blame anyone. After all, mistake are made, and with all that some people have on their plates, a simple mistake like this is really understandable. I am just glad that they do what they do and thank them for their continued efforts.

Thanks again to all of those that offer, and provide,  all of us so much IL2 joy.

If someone could tell me how to attach a file to this post, I could include the error log that showed which specific files were missing.

A better solution would have been to download and use DBW_Build1.1_Part2_super.7z , which replaced build 1.0, instead of using the old DBW_Build1.1_Part2.7z , which required 1.0 to be installed first.

I have changed the wording of the note in the download thread slightly to perhaps be a little less ambiguous

Quote
Note: The original Base Pack 1.0 has fallen away. If you are new to DBW, you now directly go to Build 1.1, downloading Build 1.1 part 1 and Build 1.1 part 2 "super". Users who already have Build 1.1 (the older version) over the old build 1.0, no not need this before proceeding to build 1.2.

First of all, thank you for a quick response, as well as DBW itself. But now I have a couple of questions.

In the original file I downloaded, it has only the Jivers67 sound mod, and the missionPro Combo mod by PAL in the jsgmemods folder. None of the other jsgme mods from the SUPER version are included.

Should I use the current mods I have installed? Are they current ? I have already downloaded the Jivers67 mod from the "DBW Official Optional Expansions" thread.

Concerning all of the other mods in the SUPER version, can I just copy them over and be done with it ?

Should I install the super over the install I have now ?

Or should I start all over, again ?

Never mind, I will just do a reinstall.

BTW, even though there is a better solution, than what I did, how many of the other people with the 5% crash having the same problem I was having. All I was pointing out was that there seemed to be an ongoing problem. I hope that I have helped someone out there understand what might help them with their problem.

We noted and it's highly appreciated.
I'm one of those who didn't stumble upon the new "super" part 2 and I guess you're right that several others might have fallen into the same trap, too.
Now that we all know about the preferred way, let's just take the official approach and use the "super" part 2.

Best regards - Mike
