« on: July 26, 2011, 02:41:08 AM »

Another quiz question. The advertisiment below was published in the Times Newspaper on 4th June 1943? What British Operation did it relate to?
No googling now  :P

I saw Royal Marines and was going to have a stab and say the Raid on St Nazaire but a Rear Admiral definitely didn't die in that raid!

Hmm, I'll hold back the temptation not to Google it until someone else posts :)

By the casualty list, I would say it is a ship that went down, although a Rear Admiral being killed is very unusual. The nearest RN warship loss by date is 30th May, RN submarine Untamed sinking during training exercise in the North Sea. There was a lot of Naval action taking place around Pantelleria at this time, and several Atlantic convoys. Often it would take a while for ship losses to be announced, as sometimes nothing was heard from the ship, although in this case, there seem to have been wounded too.

Since I couldn't get it myself, I eventually asked google and the result is that it's several operations. Quiz error?

Best regards - Mike
