500 mph Spitfire - Supermarine Spiteful
« on: July 29, 2011, 12:49:32 PM »

I was browsing Wikipedia some days ago and I came across this interesting page.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Supermarine_Spiteful
The words "successor to the Spitfire" and "494 mph" immediately caught my attention.

Cockpit looks almost exactly like the Spitfire.

The Supermarine Spiteful was a British Rolls-Royce Griffon-engined fighter aircraft designed by Supermarine to Air Ministry specification F.1/43 during the Second World War as a successor to the Spitfire. The Spiteful featured new laminar flow wings, inward retracting wide track undercarriage, larger tail plane and re-designed fuselage. With the advent of jet propulsion, however, the future of high-performance fighters was clearly with the jet fighter, and so the order was later cancelled with only a handful of Spitefuls built.

This ended up being the last distillation of wartime Spitfire skill, knowldege & research into a few drops of Spitfuls & Seafangs. Also it would make a lovelier skin hack for a Lautern J-2 Skyly with almost undeneyable closeness if it were given thunderbolt style fuz to fit internal ducts & turbo systems
