May be a little late in the day, but I have discovered an amazing series of period (late 40's) super-accurate topographical maps. Now my go-to reference.

Hi Tom.  Still going with it.  I hit a wall around Christmas when RL got in the way, as it does at that time of the year.  Have made more progress however since December.

Below are some shots of improvements to Rabaul township.  If you compare to earlier wip shots, you can see the new underpainting and shading that the roads, trees and buildings are getting.  This is applied to the ground texture and helps bed all the objects down.  Previously all the objects just seemed to 'float' on the surface.  I also put in hundereds of little tracks between buildings.  Aerial shots seem to show a lot of those.  The effect is quite nice and really makes the place look inhabited.
Also added a scruffy section of beach to the town texture itself, that way it won't stray too far inland.  Moved some coastal roads to more accurate locations (about 3 metres east).

I still need to sort out take off and taxi points.  Something I know nothing about yet.  The revetments need repainting too as an optional extra for users.  The active volcano may need reskinning too, as it was not nearly so covered in ash as it is today.

Anyhow, enjoy the screens gents  :)

Very nice job!  8)
I hardly fly PTO but this map will be a good reason to do so.
I understand you made it look like more inhabited by adding extra roads. Another way to make it look like more inhabited is by adding objects like cars, trucks and the washing line with laundry object for instance. That's the method I use since I work on repopulating another map.
And an easy way to fill up empty spaces between buildings is by putting the random trees on the map.

About airfields, waypoints etc. take a look at spdr109's topic.
The best info you can have. Very comprehensive.

Thanks for the screens! Amazing work, Bee!  :)

I really like the volcano in this Rabaul version, adds lot to the immersion of the landscape-really a great looking map. I also like the city work.

Some inspirational links.. :)
Can't wait to fly there with my P-38.

Bee your talent and creativity is amazing. Populating that by hand and stepping out of the box in creation is fantatstic. You have a great vision of what you want to populate.

Bee,

I made these repaints some time ago and have been using them in my own game.

If you like them, use them any way you wish.

Just let me know and I will send you a link.

Why not just post the repaints for all members to use?
