Now I really am screwed. It appeared to install fine, but when I attempt to run the clean version it produces msg saying "Unable to write license data" and refuses to run. this despite installing it on 2 occasions from each of two separate genuine IL1946 discs. To make matters worse my old installation which was residing in a renamed file whilst I tried the new install now doesn't work even when the folder has been renamed back to what it was.  So nothing to play at all!

shit man, sounds like something's screwed up there horribly.
can you do a system restore, and see if that helps? perhaps a day or two back...
when exactly does it give that error? while installing from the disc?

if you can, it might be a good idea to run a registry cleaning app, ccleaner or such, just to sort out the registry, in case something's wrong there.
are you experiencing any other issues with your pc, or is it just il2?

Run CC Cleaner regularly, so it's not that. Also immediately tried doing  a system restore to a week previously, and that didn't alter the problem...No other noticeable probs. IL Stab loads normally, points to the right folder for the old installation when I rename the folder back to Ubisoft. It appears to be the exe file not working there. As to when the fresh install didn't work: absolutely the whole load went OK, at the end of the installation process it tells me it's done it successfully, the files show normally in the correct folder but I just get this damned msg when trying to run it.

feck....okay, i'm going to ask some of the other guys to help look into this.
can you give the exact error message, please?
and also, this is a stock 1946 CD (v4.07) we're talking about here, right?

edit: could you try something for me, mate?
i've added a zip attachment with one of the Ubi registry entries. can you d/l it, extract the reg file, then double/click to add it to the registry when it asks?
IMPORTANT! before doing this, please check and tell me what, if any, Ubi entries you have in your registry at the moment? a screenshot would be great...
then reboot, and try to run il2 again.
this might do the trick, please let me know how it goes.

Thanks for that. Will do. I have no Ubi entries in registry at present as I have just taken them out again after the unusable install. I have been putting in a stock IL246 "straight from the box". Thanks for the zip. I'll try it shortly. Grateful for all your interest and assistance.

Nope. Nothing works. I think my last throw will be to try to use the complete backup I have on an external drive. If that's no good I will try removing absolutely everything and start from scratch with the new CD which is in the post to me at the moment.

that's unfortunate. i've never come across this issue before, il2 is pretty easy to run with windows, you can even use it as 'plug 'n play' on a flashstick, without any windows install.
hope the new cd works - keep us updated.
