alotef,

I tried making the airbase my "home base" and added the "recon, landing" target for both the Bay of Biscay and Circus missions that I posted. In neither case did tower respond to my request for runway lights. I don't understand why. There are no enemy objects in either mission. I kept requesting runway lights on my approach, within 1 km of touching down. Occasionally, but not always, the tower would respond to my lights requests with "Red one, you are clear to land". I was careful to push '6' rather than '5' when I made my requests. So, the redundant "clear to land" may be a clue.

In any case, I do very much appreciate your interest in the matter. One of the many things I like about the SAS site is that people do try to help each other here.

Thanks :).

Cheers,

Riptide

How strange. :/
Do you have any other mods installed that may be conflicting?

alotef,

I have about 13 planes installed. I use some of the DBW JSGME mods. I'll start looking for mod conflicts. Thanks.

Cheers,

I have a lead on this one.

After A LOT of testing all kind of mission parameters, I come to the following (preliminary) conclusion.
The command for runway lights is ignored, if the game engine fails to properly identify the airfield as an airfield. Sounds strange, and I don't know if it actually describes correctly what the engine is doing, but let me explain by using an example.

I had a very strange incarnation of this bug on the Nachtjagd map (DBW 1.6) at West Raynham (RWY 02/20). I set up a mission beginning with T/O at this RWY, I ask for RWY lights, get "received" and lights come on.
Now, a second mission, same time of day, everything identical to the first one except I am airborne on downwind RWY 02/20. I turn base, establish and ask for lights. Nothing. Last time I asked was when I crossed the threshold. Nothing. No reply. (I tried many more variations of this. Result: I don't get lights when approaching the field from the air.)
Now, if in these very same missions however I set up an AI plane to takeoff from West Raynham, runway lights work just as they should.

It must have something to do with the takoff and runway points of an airfield. I guess that if they are too far apart, or arranged in a pattern which is hard to digest for the game engine, we get the no runway lights bug.

For example, in the Bay of Biscay mission riptide posted the AI takeoff trick didn't work. However, once I moved my own takeoff waypoint from the location it had snapped to when it was created to the other end of the runway, lights become available.

I hope more people get interested in this issue. We need more data. Hopefully in the end we get a better understanding of how this works and can establish some 'best practice' procedures for mapmaking.

I've noticed the same thing. Thus far, I have come to the conclusion that the request for runway lights works on some maps, not on others. For example, I can get this function to work when creating missions on the Madrid map, but not Italy Online. (There are other examples as well.) It's not a matter of setting the wrong allegiance (red vs. blue) or necessarily the distance of an "enemy" aircraft, but more (I think) of a map function. Interestingly, when "none" is chosen for the allegiance, the lights work . . . but continuously of course.

Not scientific, just my observations.

That's exactly what I first doubted, later on feared, and now we believe can rule out.
Key incident was that at some point I experienced this problem on a map of which I knew runway light requests work properly.
Therefore I am convinced now that it is not related to the map in general, but rather to individual airfields on a map and how they are built (which doesn't rule out of course that on certain maps all airfields might be affected).
Might be worth checking different airfields on the Italy OL map.

Btw, the distance from the airport that needs to be clear of enemy planes is 12km I just found out.

Ah. You are right. I moved my "home" airbase around the Italy OL map from what I think is a base on Sardinia (or Pantaleria, hard to tell on the map) to one in Napoli) and discovered that the lights worked. So it is airbase dependent.

And as far as the distance from the enemy aircraft, what I simply meant was that I created missions without any enemy ai at all, but still had the issue.

Thanks.

Actually this was meant as a general remark since we were discussing enemy AI + runway lights earlier in the thread. But I made it look like an answer to your last port. Sorry for the confusion.
