Well

Eventually map makers will come to the point that a few or some specific objects will be needed which would thoroughly enhance a map.

I've come to that point concerning the WIP Northern Borneo map. Tarakan Island I read had 700 wells all over the island Miri is a featured Oil field site with The Grand Old Lady as is Seria.

There are a number of oil fields and oil related instillations in Borneo.

Pondering and pondering which current object could be used to create a rendition of an oil well.

At first I thought of the two red and brown cranes thinking about trying to take the tops off of them and sinking them in to the ground some.

I also thought that one of the radar towers could work cutting some of it off and sinking the concrete blocks into the ground.

I finally decided on the Metal Observation Tower.

From this current object is it feasable to make a capped oil well and an uncapped oil well (about to be ready for oil production).

I have extracted the necessary files I see the three skins of the Metal Observation Tower and the Damage skin.

(Initially I think there would be no damage model at the beginning) Perhaps at a later date.

Being new to all of this this is where the Open Discussion theme comes into effect.

I want to really know if the following can be done without using a 3d program like Blender

For a capped Oil Well

1)shorten the observation room to above the windows very lowered and keep the railing but shortening that by one row, shorten ladder and place on main frame work .

For an uncapped Oil Well

remove the entire observation structure including the floor

THE  OIL PIPE.

Use the pipe from the small crane and see if it can be fitted in to  the middle of the metal framing structure.

I have heard about alpha channels etc

But an open discussion on the feasability of all of the above would be helpful

Can all this be achieved just using diferent Gimp methods  or not?

I think the oil pipe would be the most tricky thing to do.

Any tips or how to achieve a possible oil well object from the  metal observation tower would be greatful as well as tips on adding a modified object to the static ini

    • Canons Skins - textures for Il-2

Hi Kirby,

Achieving that through just modifying the texture of the observation tower is pretty impossible. If you post some photos of the exact things you mean I should be able to make them for you as brand new objects.

Ok Joe

I'll dig up what I can find on 'The Grand Old Lady' at Miri and post a number of photos and try and get some dimensions.

If I can't get true diminsions I do think the height of the metal observation tower would do.

If you are interested in making them don't just make them for this WIP map make them as a new object set possibly two. 1 capped and one un capped

Everybody  can use them.

Skipper did something some time ago mainly with offshore installations but not available.

I've never done anything in Blender/ 3d max etc.

I'm sure though very useful objects   :D ;) :)

Hey Canon, Farang,

Here are some images I included in a request last year. Hope they inspire.

Hi Joe,

Here's some references on The Grand Old Lady at Miri in Sarawak

I also like Kopf's image of the wells with the little roof structure over them.  ;)

Possibly one for Pacific Region  Grand Old Lady and  and one for Europe Region Kopf's image

I may e mail the museum to see if I can get a blue print/ 3 view scale drawing  of it.

Grand Old Lady's main height 30 meters

I am very glad that this theme is open here.
The thing I need is  to learn, how

1. shorten Leopoldov Fort 2 object (by a factor of 2),
2. increase the height of UUfflakkes towers (by a factor of 2),

but I think it would be most usual for every mappaker, to write a short, step-by-step tutorial, how to modify the objects in 3DSmax or gmax and reincorporate them into Il2.

I'll still fiddle around with the current observation tower.

To start just to see if I can remove the complete top of the sructure.

is there some way to change the size of the objects?  I'm trying to make up something for the Virgin Islands where I used to live, but the scale of the buildings, airfields, etc. is way too big for the island.  I get the feeling that I"m in waaay over my head here, and need tools and programs that I know nothing about.
