Would be happy to test, KB. However, only got the use of internet at work, so will d/l monday, test monday night at home. I think its a pretty realistic scenario even if the barge doesnt sink, as strafing probably wouldnt sink a barge (well, not quickly anyway!), but would probably explode the cargo and wheel house etc (I suppose the secondary effect of that might sink the barge.) Ive seen much film footage of Mosquitos & Beaufighters strafing cargo ships and small warships- the same in the Pacific with Corsairs/Hellcats/P51's, so there is no doubt that it was common practice for marauding fighters to strafe shipping. Even if its only stationary shipping, it would be a nice addtion to the game. Good luck with the upload.

That's my thinking too Thunda.  :)  If these objects are mixed in with regular Stationary Ships, you could have some sinking (the stationary ships) and some not - I reckon it could work quite well.  From the testing I've done, it might be quite nice to see if they could be made to 'burn' longer to get nice columns of smoke over the battlefield - someone who knows a bit about effects might be able to help with that, or I'll poke around and see what I can find out.

I wonder if there's any reason these couldn't also be made into 'Chiefs' columns, like a truck convoy or train, for example a 'convoy' of barges travelling up a river?  I'm not sure Chief waypoints can be plotted on water in the FMB, but I'm pretty sure they can be 'swapped out' inside the .mis files.

It would also be interesting to see how large this could be scaled before it becomes ineffective?  I figure a barge is broadly comparable to a large truck as far as 'targets' are concerned.  Maybe a small steel constructed freighter is roughly comparable to an armored car, a small corvette or destroyer similar to a tank?

Be interesting to see if we can get any guns working on these objects - even the barge model this is based on has a gun, although I haven't tried to make it work yet in the stationary object.

I'll keep you posted.  :)

RAF ramrod missions were often aimed at barge transport on canals in occupied Europe, as large amounts of freight were moved around that way. Depending on what they were carrying would depend on whether they exploded or not. Also, surely a fuel tanker would explode if strafed?

This has been discussed on a different thread, but even .30 machine guns could punch through thin metal, and 0.50 caliber AP rounds could easily go through a ship's hull and could damage superstructure, AAA guns and whatnot of armored ships like cruisers and battleships.

So, if there were likely to be enemy planes about, towards the end of the war Allied pilots shot up anything that moved, including ships and barges.

You can edit DM for ships so that they're (slightly) vulnerable to machine guns and 20-30mm cannons. I think that you can also edit them so that they burn longer and produce bigger flames/smoke.

Getting AI planes to attack barges and boats with MG and cannon is another matter!

It's sort of a matter of luck to get a fuel tanker to explode. You can often get it to burn very nicely, but getting the fuel to actually explode is a bit trickier and depends on what sort of fuel it's carrying. Gasoline or kerosene might explode if it gets vaporized before it ignites, other fuels were harder to explode, or even to ignite. Many German vehicles ran on diesel fuel, which is harder to explode. There was also a lot of bunker oil for ships, which is less explosive than diesel.
