Right,

Well, it seems a move from the original folder to my newly created 'special' folder 'C:>Programs>Ubisoft' seems to have sorted it. I've fully reinstated it in the new location (including modifying the registry) and it appears to have cleared it. Thank God! Fingers crossed!   :)

All in (less than) a day's work!  ;)

So for anyone else who has this problem - you know what to do, and don't worry - it's p*ss easy!  ;D

I'll avoid modifying the paintschemes folder and adding paintschemes whilst the game is running in future...  ::)

Thanks for the pointers guys, but it turns out for once something I did has solved it!

Scratch that. It's f*cking doing it a-f*cking-gain. What the holy motherf*cking sh*tting hell???!!!  >:(  >:(  >:(

No idea now. Moving the folder and renaming it doesnt help at all here. Something really messed this one up big time. The only thing I did before this was to install some Swiss 109 repaints into paintschemes.  :-\

Interestingly I believe before it happened, whilst the game was loading, at about 60% the Windows cursor 'circle' icon appeared for a brief moment before it carried on loading. Thought nothing of it. But then the b*stard QMB menu wasn't showing up. So although that might lead somewhere I have no idea where.

Any other pointers at this point would be brill guys. May well just do a bloody total bloody reinstall from f*cking scratch.

But f*ck off am I staying up till 5am again, you piece of shit laptop.

EDIT: Update: Don't worry, I've cooled off now, managed to resist throwing my laptop out the window and across the garden and then taping it to a firework... :) (5th November in UK is famous for fireworks) I decided to copy the game folder to my external HDD just to see what would happen, and see if the computer wanted to play sh*ts and gigs with me still... During the highly ambiguously stated time it said it was going to complete the copy in (6 minutes to 12 minutes to 40 minutes to 4 minutes 30 seconds to 80 seconds to 6 minutes), I read that it might have been an issue with the last.quick mission file... I opened it with word pad and saw straight away that it was defining a skin - and then I remembered when I added some Swiss 109E-3 skins I also deleted some - a deleted skin was the one defined in that file. Before I fired it up on the external I deleted the last.quick file. Guess what? It fired up like there was no tomorrow.  :-\

So, I am now copying it back to it's new location on the C: drive and then I will fire it up again, without that bloody mission file getting in the way - hopefully.

I can't believe something like that would cause it - surely it would just revert to the default paintscheme?  ::) But if it's that simple to fix, I ain't gonna complain.

Once again - I notice my posts have rather domintated this page, if anyone still cares about my chaotic thought processes and how I go about my clueless computer destruction which I am rambling about out loud - I will keep you posted.  8)

Whilst still being cautious, I think I can now say with more certainty than ever before:

PROBLEM SOLVED!

... and what a b*tch of a problem to solve... the cause of which incidentally has taken me nearly exactly 24 hours to find.  :-\

It was indeed a problem with the .last.quick file in 'Quicks' folder. Simply deleting this file resolves it. Well I never...

It seems when I select some Swiss paintschemes which I downloaded for the 109 before quitting the game and then start it again, the QMB failure occurs, but only with one of all the added paintschemes on the 109E-3 mod (part of the 109 Ultimate pack) so far. Suspicious.  ::)

Anyways, I guess I'll just have to be careful in future and reset the QMB menu when neccessary, and although I've now found it's supposedly pretty easy to fix, I still want to know why, as it may cause problems elsewhere...

Off to bed now and will retest in the morning. Assume good news if you hear nothing :)

EDIT: Update: Ok, I post this morning with a major feeling of embarrassment and stupidity! Thought I should let you know. Turns out be weary of what your paint scheme files are called... It was the Swiss 109's I installed that were causing the problem all along, simply the apostrophes (') and semicolons (; ) in the file name were causing some confusion for the last.quick file - that's it!  ;D

Replaced those characters with _ and it's all back to normal in every way now. Can select those files, quit the game and go back into QMB with those files still active as the last ones selected and it doesn't have a hissy fit. Cool. 8)

Think I will leave it out of Program Files though...

Thanks again all.

Later guys.

I can confirm that this IS the problem. Well done mike, this is worthy of a beer or two. ~S~

Some of my favourite planes have a lot of skins in their paintscheme folder. A couple of years ago, to help me recognise them quickly in game I had copied them and renamed them #1 etc. This # is the problem.

QMB back and running fine.

Thanks very much for your time and effort, much appreciated.

Haha! I could certainly do with a beer (or two)!  8)

I'm certainly glad that someone else can confirm this is the issue. Only hope that those in future will be able to use this info to find the fix a lot easier than we have. I'm just annoyed it was something actually so trivial.  :-\ Ah the world of modding...  :)

No worries, thank you all for all the help, I wouldn't be enjoying my passion in aviation and the history of WWII half as much if it wasn't for you guys at SAS.  :)

i've thoroughly enjoyed watching this thread progress, albeit only watching your suffering at some point - there were a few issues i wanted to mention, but i guess not necessary, as you've solved it by yourself, and there is rarely a better feeling.
although we prominently mention things like this in our guides, it is not recommended to put your game inside the Program Files folder, especially with newer OS's, like Win 7/Vista.
well done on figuring it out. :D

Nice to read about someone else finding solutions while typing, moving files, cursing, sleeping and meanwhile the inside of the scull (also named brains) is figuring out solutions! As Malone said I also enjoyed the process, I had a fit of my owna few days (or maybe weeks) ago!
(@ Malone, how about making a "Solved problems and solutions" thread for easier access? )

H, that might be an idea.
i'll have to see how it fits in with the other changes we are in the process of doing.
