Fuel Tank Selector
« on: November 20, 2011, 10:25:43 PM »

I think that a Fuel selector option would be great for the sim, thinking that that could make the sim a lot more realistic and turn the table in some cases, for example, if we could select the belly fuel tank of a Mustang and use that fuel to get to the target or to bump all the fuel from the belly before entering in a dogfight, the plane would get lighter and the lack of fuel in that tank would chang the gravity center of the plane and make a lot better in continuos turns.
Hope somebody can make this.
Cheers

but if the mustang gets that, all the other planes need to get it too, or its not fair any more.
so... B-25 for example:

B-24:

and the Me-410 too!
Quote
2 x 630 l and
2 x 410 l in the mid-wing section
2 x 170 l in the outer-wing section

In addition the 410B-1 fast bomber is noted being capable of carrying 2 x 300 underwing droptanks, boosting fuel to 3020 liter.
Me-262, to fight the P-51

... a VERY ambitious request.
Its been discussed for several pages in the banana forums, and all that TD managed to say was:
we need to redo the wholeplaneset with accurate damage models, and redefine the whole FMS to include the changes and physics and stuff.

I would love to see this... all the noobs would fail to switch tanks and drop out of the sky... natural selection. mwaaahhaahha

Well, was just an idea, but there is no need to have a fuel selector for each tank, but for each section, like "Belly, outer wing, iner wing".
And for the noobs, there are two option, teh first could be that the mod could be part of the "realistic engine controls" in the dificulty menu or, they all can go find an arcade cuse' this is a simulator :D

In addition to recoding DM and FM for every plane in the game, you'd also need to rework the cockpits so that the fuel selectors switches aren't just eye candy, and also figure out pump capacities, fuel transfer rates and so forth.

But, it's not impossible, just seriously time-consuming for the right sort of seriously underemployed and obsessive java programmer.

Every step towards making IL-2 as realistic as CloD is a plus in my book.

This was a plus that Microsoft Combat Flight Simulator 2 had over IL2 from day one in my book.  About the only one, too!  (Well, okay, the ability to warp, while unrealistic, sure made those campaign mission long overwater Pacific theater flights a whole lot more bearable, that's for sure.) Would be nice to see.  Someday...

Yeah :D
I think that a fuel selector and an axis control for the mixture in EVERY plane would make engine controls in IL2 as real as CloD or even FS.

Incidentally, what changes need to be made to damage models?

heeeh. in cfs2 you had a battery switch... not operating the battery switch properly left you without electricity...
make that another one.

Reminds me this is a ten years old game, a dinosaur.

DM: well, if you have a hole in the left tank AND have switched to any of the other tanks, your engine will not die? nothing visually, i guess, but still related to that system?

That's correct. Currently in Il-2 the game recognises two sources of fuel: internal stores and external stores. Drop tanks work essentially as they should but each flight model is encoded with one value for total fuel (that is, there is nowhere within the flight model that recognises separate internal tanks).

So in reality, you would need to recode the entire fuel code, each flight models, each damage model, cockpit etc in game to get multiple tanks before you could even consider doing tank switching.

This was a plus that Microsoft Combat Flight Simulator 2 had over IL2 from day one in my book.

Three things that I miss from CFS2 are:

1) The whole world modeled, not just maps, so good for long missions. (Although the world looked like cr#p when you got within a few thousand feet of the ground, there were no trees or waves, and the world looked very empty in places where there was no scenery placed.)

2) Much better weather modeling in the mission builder, which allowed you to set cloud layers, percentage of overcast, wind speed and direction, etc. (But, it didn't snow and the clouds still didn't move.)

3) You actually had an LSO (actually a little graphic of an LSO in the corner of your screen) when you tried to land on a US carrier.

Other than that, I have no regrets about switching to IL2. Occasionally, I'll fire up CFS2 for old times sake. And, the first time that I "collide" with an airplane that's 20 yards away when I make a close pass, I'm reminded of the reason I switched.
