Gloster Gladiator in Soviet Scheme
« on: November 27, 2011, 09:42:41 AM »

The Gladiator is a great plane that seems to have been fading into forgetfulness on Il-2. Here are a few new skins made on a revised template. I have no idea where the Soviets got these Gladiators from, captured Finnish planes I would surmise or maybe as British military aid.

In any case, here are a few skins in Soviet schemes. I used a different unit insignia on the tail than the one depicted on the profile, since I could not extract it with enough detail.

Did Baltic states (Latvia, Estonia or Lithuania) use this plane before being under Soviet domination ? that could be a clue about from where they came...

They most certainly did use them. I have profiles for Lithuanian and Latvian Gladiators, which I was maybe planning on making, mainly in the interests of obscurity. But you are likely correct in thinking these planes were incorporated into the Soviet air forces ... good observation.

Thanks for the Latvian profile. I see that the tail insignia is the same as on the Soviet profile ... I can use that to update this small detail on the skins ...

IIRC, the Latvian Gladiators changed hands many times. Great Britain sold them to Latvia. The Soviet Union captured them when they occupied the country in 1940. Then, Germans captured some of them in 1941 and put them to use as trainers.

Unfortunately, it appears that the ex-Latvian, ex-Soviet, Luftwaffe aircraft were all destroyed in accidents or were scrapped, thus preventing them from being captured by the UK and completing the cycle. :)

Well, let us do our best to keep the virtual circle unbroken then ... here are some Latvian skins as per the profiles provided in the links above ... and I also included one all single color skin in silver, just because I can never leave well enough alone I suppose.

More pretty skins!

I'm glad you found the Biplane Aces site useful. Lots of wonderful information there for early WW2 aviation fans.

I apologize for bring this ancient thread up.  Do anyone have this skin? the link no longer work since long time ago.  I am collecting the skins for BAT. I realized that having more variety of skins besides default and a few skins make BAT much more refreshing to fly for any maps, from historical to 'what if' alternative historical.
