Parabolic lines of fire for artillery
« on: January 06, 2012, 04:35:19 AM »

Currently missions must be designed with line of sight for artillery making for some silly looking gun placements.  Parabolic lines of fire for artillery would greatly enhance the believability of many missions.  If additional data on ranges etc are needed I can provide it for some guns.  I'm not sure that that existing effective ranges would not suffice for a start.  Not all guns need to be modded and the mod could make parabolic firing artillery pieces additional objects making it much simpler to develop.

Hey Wolf,

This is a problem that has attracted some attention in the past. There has been some concern about the calculation of parabolic fire. I have always thought this would be a great feature, but my non-mathematical mind wonders why the game has to know that artillery is fired parabollically.
From my way of thinking, in order for the game to represent indirect (aimed and observed) artillery fire it only needs to relate the following conditions :
                                                                                      Target Location
                                                                                      Spotter Location
Gun/Battery Location (only insofar as effective range of the weapon is concerned)

The process so far as the game code is concerned need only be
                                                                                         1. Spotter sights target

Target in Range                                                                                                Target Beyond Range

                                          2.  Gun/Battery Fires Spotting Round                                                                            No Fire Mission

                                                 Shell(s) in Flight

          3.  Spotting Round Accurate               4.  Spotting Round Inaccurate
Accuracy Dependent upon Spotter/Battery  Experience/National Characteristics

                     5.   Spotter Calls in Fire For Effect                     6. Observer Calls in Second Spotting Round

Shell(s) in Flight                                               Shell(s) in Flight

                     7.   Gun/Battery Fires FFE                                  8. Spotting Round Brackets Target  Go to 3. or 4.

Shell(s) in Flight                                               Shell(s) in Flight

                     9.    Salvo Lands

I'd love to have others weigh in here. Why does the game need to know the shells travel parabollically - it only needs to show/know there is a gunflash and that the rounds explode somewhere - not how the rounds get there.
Please correct me if I am wrong. I'd love to see this solved.

It could add to the FAC role very nicely, or for that matter any aircraft flying in close support.
One of the first things you do before a fire mission is clear airspace. Aircraft don't react well when hit by mortar/artillery rounds in flight.

About the shell's travel, we already have something like it in the Katyusha multiple rocket launchers.
So, we don't need to emulate something, but to make it as it was.

I made a mission in the last year, that I use some Katyushas to emulate a German airbase under artillery fire. I put some Katyushas hidden in a forest near the airbase, and nobody knew that they weren't cannons. :D :P

My 2 cents. ;)
