I think I "solved" my issue with the keyboard letters but I don't fully understand how or why.

Perusing through the main game folder, I saw two similar executables "il2fb.exe" and Il-2 Selector.exe. On a whim, I double-clicked on "Il-2 Selector.exe" and after starting the game, my letter keys worked again. I've now created an shortcut to this and it seems to function.

But I have no idea why this happened or why things now work. Haven't given it much of a go yet, but it seems to be back to normal.

In the instructions to install is written to start the selector at least once and save your settings...

If anyone is interested, this method of install also works very well and has the added benefit of you're not being without a working version of Il-2.

Just make a totally new and clean install up to 1.7. Do not install OVER a 1.6 version, but make a new version, separate. Then once you verify that it works - and if you followed the instructions including the deletion of several folders during the install - it should work without a hassle, you can then start to import your mods from 1.6 into 1.7, either one by one or in batches of 4 or 5 or whatever.

This will probably take as long as disabling your mods in a 1.7 OVER 1.6 install, and then enabling them one by one again ... but with the benefit that you will not be left without a working copy of the game. It saves lots of stress this way, knowing you have a working copy ...

Once you are satisfied with your new 1.7 version, having verified it working over several days, then you can start importing skins, music, pilots and what have you before finally retiring from the old 1.6 version.

Just found a problem with the Naval QMBPro Missions - all show Data File Corrupt Error when trying to run. Everything else is brilliant!

Thanks ,

@Ribs
That is why the QMB PRO mod was deleted from the JSGME folder... if you followed the instructions.
because possibly, probably, the QMBpro mod might not work as before any more or some such thing.

@btasm: so you did not follow the install instructions - would you have done so, your keys and letters would have worked.

whats funny...
Bob holmes describes himself as an olt fart, not too smart. (to paraphrase)
He can get it done.

LOLz.
reading instructions carefully is half the Job.
Way to start a day. at least things can go uphill from here.
Come on, guys...

K, need a little help here... Followed the directions to the letter.  From working DBW 1.6 install, disabled all jsgme mods, deleted ai mod and mission pro combo folders from jsgme folder, deleted XTD folder from DBW folder, deleted QMB pro folder from missions folder, and then copied files from 1.7 download to il2 main directory.  I run the new selector, pick my settings (dbw with 512mb ram).  I click save settings.  I then click "Start IL-2 Now!"  ...

and nothing happens   :(

no loading screen, no activity from my hdd, nothing.  I think the selector might blink slightly, but that's it.  If I select the "exit selector after il2 quits" box and then click run il2, the selector just closes itself.  So... I have no idea.  I've tried changing ram settings, i've tried enabling/disabling mod cache, i've tried running classic game/up/modact/etc all with the same result of nothing happening.  I haven't tried enabling any of my jsgme mods, but don't know if that would have an effect... Uzin mentioned something on pg 7 of this thread about the filesize of il2fb.exe being different after 1.7 install?  My il2fb.exe filesize is 156kb... any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

try this: go to your game folder, to the "bin" folder, and delete the "selector" folder there. in your main game folder, delete the il2fb.exe
DINPUT.dll
il2fb.ini
wrapper.dll

then go to the download. Copy the Bin folder, and the IL-2 Selector.exe and il2fb.ini to your main game folder.

Then launch the IL-2 Selector.exe

go the "change settings", and select "Stock Game" (if it is already selected, select it again), with 128MB ram. Clik "Save Setting"

Then select Dark Blue World. also with 128 MB ram, and again Save Setting.

Then, exit the selector.

You will now find it created a new il2fb.exe in your main game folder. Clcik on that to launch the game. See if it works.

All other stuff regarding selector also still counts, like not having the game in your program files folder, ect.

i've tried enabling/disabling mod cache

Have you disabled mods in the #DBW folder by writing "-" in front of the mod's folder?
I had problem with the mod "GEAR damage".

99% of problems reported in this thread so far are due to the very simple fact of people not reading, or simply ignoring, the info that is stated with the download.
99%.   ::)
i don't know how much else we are expected to do, short of coming around to your physical address and doing what the instructions ask, for you.
this thread is now 9 pages deep, yet it seems everey next post asks a question that has already been answered SEVERAL times in THIS VERY thread. sorry, but are we missing something here? how difficult can it be to JUST READ through what has been asked, AND ANSWERED, already?
holy frikkin' trinity.....where's the pre-schoolers sign-up page, i seem to have missed it..... ???

I don't think that it was written in the instructions that you have to enable track ir classfiles to make it work...so I see myself in the 1% who's problems is not related to not reading  ;D
