Beat me to it, coatesy!

Yeah, maybe I over-reacted a bit, but I didnt like the way it was said.

And its a bit more than "grey theory and numbers." Its fact. The Lightning was an exceptional aircraft, and its probably a good job for Mig21 drivers that it didnt get used in anger.

"Known to some in the RAF as '22 tons of screaming aluminium' in the right hands, it would have a Mig21 for breakfast......."
We can't be sure which plane will be the breakfast because they've never been in a battle! ;)

The English Electric Lightning is credited with a single kill, ironically a British aircraft – a Harrier pilot ejected and the pilot-less aircraft continued to fly. The order was given to shoot down the aircraft and the Lightning did.

Its faster. In the climb, turn, acceleration, the Lightning is superior. Its more manoverable. RAF pilots are amongst the best in the world. No offence, but I dont fancy an Egyptian or Iranian Mig 21 pilots chances against an RAF Lightning.

But hey, as everyone keeps saying, we'll never know!

By the way, Coatsey, Roland Beaumont was the Lightning development-programme chief test pilot, also for the TSR2, as well as the Canberra in which he was the first man to make a double-atlantic crossing by jet, when on 26 August 1952, flying Canberra B.5 VX185, he flew from Aldergrove to Gander and then back again to Aldergove, in 10 hours 3 minutes.

He was a major player in the western air war during WWII, during 3 operational tours (being a test pilot for Hawker when he wasnt operational) he shot down 9 aircraft whilst developing the Typhoon into Squadron service, when all around him wanted it grounded. He brought the Tempest to Squadron service and shot down 3 Me109's over the D-Day beaches, 32 V1's and a Fw190 with it before being finally shot down whilst strafing a train. As you say, Gerax, quite a guy!!!

A good for (Il2) aspects of Lightning is that it has rather simple forms: 2tubes+2planes+tail... :)
So its modding could be simpler than such aircrafts as F-4 Phantom.

Also it has powerful cannon armament which is good for Il2.

Hoping that one day somebody could make a franken Lightning from a couple of tubes+planes and attached tail of some jet...  :)

I would be interesting to test it...

Thunda,I was just responding to your "fastest climbing aircraft ever built." statement ;)...to me,MiG25 is the ultimate hot rod \m/...mach 2.7...and there is a myth that in Iraq MiG25 was clocked at mach 3.2...true or not,I don't know.
And it takes you closest to space than any other plane...

Cheers :)

You are quite correct, Sani. The 1950's Lightning isn't the fastest climbing aircraft in the world. Bit of a miss quote to say 'your fastest climbing aircraft in the world statement' though. I said ' one of the fastest', and then in brackets (If not the fastest) because I wasn't sure. Either way, its a pretty remarkable old aircraft.
