He-51 in SCW
« on: February 06, 2012, 12:26:12 PM »

Here is an unusual looking skin for an He-51 as in use during the SCW on the Nationalist side. The scheme was taken from two photographs shown below. And while the photos show a splinter camo scheme, I didn't try to replicate it as shown, which would have been a work of frustration. Instead I applied an existing splinter camo from another skin and made do. On the photo there is also a death's head smack square on the upper nose which wasn't possible to place unfortunately.

The pilot's name in the captions was given as 'Harder', which I am brilliantly deducing is that of a German pilot (the abundant swastikas were also a hint in that direction). The crash date was given as spring 1937.

The skin was made from the existing template for this plane. I can't find any credit for the template, but it is due to whoever made it of course.

Great finding, Agracier! I love this weirdos. I had seen the bird emblem and the svastika in the fuselage roundel, but never on top wing and that improvised camo... ;D ;D ;D

In the photo, the camo looks like a very close cousin of some of the German camo types developed by Germany during the Great War ... close but still different enough ... and difficult enough to place on a skin

Yes, It's kind of a mixture between WWI Lozenge pattern and Splinter. But I guess this could be one of those "field applied" camo and the painter wasn't very expert  ;D
It probably had the three colour scheme that you chose in the skin though.
It's hard to say from the pics, but on fuselage and fin it seems to be more like usual splinter and on the wings it looks like a repaint after repairing bullet holes  :-\
With time enough it would be great to try to reproduce this mess on the wings, because it's very original and you don't have such a good view of top wing in most pics...Thanks for the "nose landing", Harder. ;D
